Piper PA-18 Super Cub и L-18/L-21/U-7

   Вероятно самым знаменитым самолетом компании "Piper" стал PA-18 Super Cub, оснащенный двигателем Continental C90-12F мощностью 90 л. с. и появившийся на рынке в конце 1949 года. Он выпускался "Piper" до 1981 года, когда компания продала все права на него компании "WTA Inc.". PA-18 постоянно совершенствовался и оснащался различными двигателями мощностью от 90 л. с. до 150 л. с. Последний серийный вариант самолета, PA-18-150, в целом повторял конфигурацию ранних двухместных моделей Cub: высокорасположенное подкосное крыло, хвостовое оперение с проволочными расчалками и неубирающееся шасси с хвостовым колесом. Однако он оснащался двигателем O-320 мощностью 150 л. с. Аналогичная силовая установка применялась и на сельскохозяйственном самолете, имевшем обозначение PA-18A и представленном в 1952 году. Самолет был оборудован бункером для химикатов и системой распыления, но легко мог переоборудоваться в самолет общего назначения. Всего было построено 2650 самолетов. Кроме гражданских, компания "Piper" построила 838 самолетов PA-18 с двигателями C90-81P для Армии США под обозначением L-18C. Из общего количества 108 были переданы другим странам мира в рамках программы военной помощи, после чего Армия заказала 150 экземпляров в целом идентичного самолета L-21A, отличавшегося двигателем O-290-11 мощностью 125 л. с. Позже какое-то количество таких самолетов было переоборудовано для использования в качестве тренировочных под обозначением TL-21A. Под обозначением YL-21 Армия США проводила оценочные испытания двух самолетов PA-18, оснащенных двигателем O-290-D2 мощностью 135 л. с., а после успешных результатов испытаний приобрела в общей сложности 584 таких самолета под обозначением L-21B. Часть машин отправилась в другие страны в рамках программы военной помощи. В 1962 году находившиеся в эксплуатации L-21B были переобозначены как U-7A.

Based at Deelan (Nrs 299 and 300) and Soesterberg (Nr 298) are the three squadrons forming the Groep Lichte Vliegtuigen, or Light Aircraft Group, maintained by the KLu primarily on behalf of the Army. Two of the squadrons, Nr 298 and Nr 299, are equipped solely with the Alouette III, but Nr 300 Squadron includes Piper L-21s in its inventory, one of these being seen above, accompanied by an Alouette III.

It is an otherwise normal Super Cub N4351Z fitted with a set of lower short-span wings. The c/n is 18-8669 but we do not know the location or date, though it is likely to belong to the early seventies. Can anyone throw any light on the purpose of this modification, its designation if any and whether it has been applied to any other types or models?
The Super Cub 'biplane' N4351Z which has been identified by Terry Murphy and Walter K.van Tilborg as an Aeromod Loadstar 100 conversion. The 21ft span lower wing gave the Loadstar a STOL performance and a minimum control speed of some 24-26 mph. Similar conversions included N1492C and N77565 while the prototype first flew in 1965 or 1966. The owner of N4351Z for many years was Dennis D.Pruett who took it to Africa in the early seventies, its registration was cancelled 3.82 and it became VP-WLH.

For liaison and general duties, the French Armie de Terre utilises a considerable number of M.D.A.P.-supplied tandem-seat Piper L-18-Cs (Super Cub 95s). Note French Army use of "sand and spinach" camouflage, white-ringed roundels and rudder tricolore. A 90-h.p. Continental O-205-1 flat-four gives cruise of 100 m.p.h. This example has serial 181613 painted above horizontal hinge line of rudder.

Harold Wagner’s first attempt to create a cheap twin was the Twin Super Cub, a PA-18 Super Cub with a second 125 h.p. Lycoming above its cabin. The upper engine of the Twin Super Cub was given 5° of upthrust; Wagner encountered some flutter problems in the tail surfaces.
