   После успеха легкого транспортного самолета C.212 Aviocar испанская фирма CASA совместно с индонезийской фирмой IPTN ("Industri Pesawat Terbang Nusantara") создала консорциум Airtech ("Aircraft Technology Industries") для разработки и постройки транспортного самолета больших размеров, оснащенного гермокабиной и пригодного для военного и гражданского применения. Работы над проектом CN.235 начались в 1980 году, а прототипы строились одновременно в обеих странах.
   Испанский прототип совершил первый полет 11 ноября 1983 года, а индонезийский - 30 декабря того же года. CN.235 был сертифицирован в июне 1986 года, а уже в августе взлетел первый серийный самолет. Поставки машин индонезийской и испанской сборок начались в декабре 1986 и феврале 1987 годов соответственно. В марте 1988 года CN.235 начали службу в авиакомпании "Merpati Nusantara Airlines". В январе 1990 года было подписано лицензионное соглашение с фирмой "Tusas Aerospace Industries" (TAI) на постройку 50 самолетов в Турции.
   Основные варианты CN.235: первая модификация CN.235 Series 10 с ТВД General Electric CT7-7A мощностью 1700 э.л.с. (1305 кВт) в новых гондолах из композитных материалов; CN.235 Series 200 и CN.235 Series 220 с усиленной конструкцией, допускающей увеличение массы, и усовершенствованной аэродинамикой руля и передней кромки крыла; CN.235 Series 330 Phoenix, разработанный в Индонезии и оснащенный более совершенным оборудованием и системой РЭП, чтобы удовлетворить требованиям австралийских военных; военно-транспортный самолет CN.235 М; патрульные самолеты CN.235 MP Persuader и CN.235 MPA испанской и индонезийской постройки соответственно, оснащенные современной электроникой, включая поисковую РЛС, ИК-систему переднего обзора FLIR и аппаратуру РЭБ, и способные нести на шести узлах подвески под крылом противокорабельные ракеты или противолодочные торпеды; конвертируемый грузо-пассажирский вариант CN.235. Гражданские модификации обычно перевозят до 44 пассажиров или 6600 кг груза, а ВТС CN.235 M предназначен для перевозки на короткие расстояния до 48 солдат с полной экипировкой, или 24 раненых на носилках при четырех сопровождающих, или 6600 кг груза.
   На военном рынке самолет пользуется большим успехом, и в 2010 году CN.235, уже выпускающийся под эгидой консорциума "Airbus Military", находился на вооружении ВВС 30 стран мира.

    US Air Force Special Operations Command/427th Special Operations Squadron CN235 96-6043 callsign 'RCH55', departs from Volkel Air Base in the Netherlands on March 24, 2021 while routing back home from the Middle East. This was the first ever visit of an AFSOC CN235 to the Netherlands. It arrived via Souda, Crete, and Aviano, Italy, then departed for Keflavik, Iceland.

    CASA CN235M-10 TN-228 (c/n C009, ex N833CA, OG2) is seen undergoing a test flight at Lanseria International Airport in South Africa during January 2013. The former Botswana Defence Force-Air Wing transport is due to be delivered to the Force Aerienne Congolaise (Congolese Air Force) in Congo (Brazzaville). The second former Botswana CN235 (5V-MBM, c/n C008, ex N820CA, OG1) remains at Lanseria in Force Aerienne Togolaise (Togolese Air Force) markings. Both aircraft were registered to Fayard Enterprises of Wake Forest, North Carolina, after being replaced in Botswana service by two new examples.

    Force Aerienne Congolaise (Congolese Air Force) CASA CN235M-10 TN-228 (c/n C009, ex N833CA) at its home base at Brazzaville-Maya-Maya Airport on October 25, 2013. The transport was one of two previously operated by the Botswana Defence Force Air Wing that were replaced by new CN235M-300s. Both were initially stored at Lanseria in South Africa, with one (5V-MBM/N820CA, c/n C008, ex OG1) due to go to the Togolese Air Force, although it never entered service with it. TN-228 was delivered to the Congo by March.

    Noted on the Airbus Military flight test line at Seville in Spain in late May 2013 was CN235 msn 208 for the Armee de I'Air du Cameroun (Cameroon Air Force). An order for a single example of the transport was announced by the manufacturer on June 6, 2012.

    Airbus Military CN235-300 tactical transport 2211/BuNo. 168988 (msn 188) arrived at Luqa Airport in Malta on September 27, 2013 during its delivery flight from the manufacturer at Seville, Spain, to the Yemen Air and Air Defence Force. It departed for Crete the following day. The aircraft was supplied via the US Foreign Military Financing programme (hence the US Navy Bureau of Aeronautics serial number) to help the Yemeni Government combat al-Qaeda operatives in the country.

    On June 5, 2013 EADS North America announced that the 15th Airbus Military HC-144A Ocean Sentry had been delivered to the US Coast Guard. The maritime surveillance aircraft (2315, msn 207) is seen undergoing flight tests at the Airbus Military facility at Seville-San Pablo Airport on May 30. The last two handed over (2313 and 2314, msns 202 and 203) were noted at Coast Guard Air Station (CGAS) Mobile, Alabama, in March. The Coast Guard has received 15 HC-144As, 14 of which have entered service at CGAS Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and CGAS Miami, Florida, as well as at Mobile, while a further three are due to be delivered this and next year. A fleet of 36 is planned.

    The final Airbus Defence and Space HC-144A Ocean Sentry for the US Coast Guard was noted during a test flight at Seville-San Pablo Airport in Spain on August 6, 2014. The aircraft (2318, msn C-211) is the last of 18 HC-144As on order, after plans to acquire additional examples were abandoned following an agreement with the US Air Force to transfer surplus Alenia C-27J Spartans to the maritime service.

    Airbus Defence and Space handed over the 17th HC-144A Ocean Sentry to the US Coast Guard at its facility at San Pablo in Seville, Spain, on March 20, 2014. Upon arrival in the United States the maritime surveillance aircraft (2317, c/n S-210) will be inducted into the Aviation Configuration Management System at the Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Center at Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to be prepared for service. The 18th and last will be delivered before the end of the year and the final three HC-144As are all due to operate from Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas. Originally 36 HC-144As were due to be acquired by the Coast Guard, but the total was halved after it was decided to transfer 14 surplus US Air Force Alenia C-27J Spartans to the service.

The aircraft are scheduled to become operational this summer, their main role being maritime search and rescue and pollution control within Spain’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

    ON JUNE 30, 2008 the Spanish Servicio Aereo de la Guardia Civil (Civil Guard Air Service) received its first CASA CN-235 Military Patrol Aircraft (MAP) (T19B-21/'09-501', c/n 180) at a ceremony at the Base Central del Servicio Aereo de la Guardia Civil (Civil Guard Air Service Headquarters) at Torrejon Air Base, Madrid. Two CN-235s are on order for the Spanish Interior Ministry, and will be flown by the Civil Guard to help counter illegal immigration and undertake anti-narcotics patrols. They are equipped with a search radar, tv/infra-red nose turret and the EADS/CASA FITS system. One will be based in the Canary Islands and the other in southern Spain.

    Search and rescue missions were flown by a CN235 VIGMA from 802 Escuadron; the unit's Super Pumas were maintained on alert to provide SAR coverage during the whole exercise.

    On March 23, 2011 a Spanish Air Force CN-235 VIGMA (Vigilancia Maritima, Maritime Surveillance) took off from Getafe AB near Madrid for Decimomannu AB on Sardinia. The aircraft is helping to enforce the arms embargo on Libya operating over the Gulf of Sirte and southern Mediterranean Sea.

    Newly converted Ejercito del Aire (EdA - Spanish Air Force) CN-235MPA maritime patrol aircraft T.19B-12/D.4-01 (c/n E A02-10-C 0 50/89) seen on approach to San Pablo Airport, Spain, on October 30, 2007, whilst test flying from the EADS CASA facility there. The aircraft is the first of six former transport CN-235-100Ms from Ala 35 at Getafe that are being converted to search and rescue aircraft, fitted with the EADS CASA FITS (Fully Integrated Tactical System), search radar, a forward-looking infra-red turret and Link 11 datalink. Although wearing its original serial T.19B-12 on the fin, under the cockpit the aircraft also carries new serial D.4-01, this being in line with the serial system adopted previously by the EdA for its SAR aircraft.

    The Fuerza Aeronaval (Mexican Naval Air Force) has taken delivery of the first of four Airbus Military CN235 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) (AMP-122, c/n 191). The manufacturer announced the handover on November 16, 2011. The aircraft were ordered via EADS North America as part of the Merida Initiative, a security agreement between the United States and various Latin American countries aimed at combating narcotics trafficking and organised crime. The other three will be delivered in the first half of 2012.
