Savoia-Marchetti S.M.83

THE FASTEST TRANSPORT: A revealing view of the Savoia Marchetti S.83 as ordered by Sabena and by transport concerns in Italy and Rumania. Powered with three Pegasus-type Alfas, the top speed, with a disposable load of 7,700 lb., is 263 m.p.h., making it the fastest standard transport in the world. The type is derived from the S.79 which holds a number of records for speed with load.
Three-engined high-speed commercial aeroplane for long distance service (civil version of the world-famous S.M 79 which won the Istres - Damascus - Paris race). ACCOMMODATION FOR 10 PASSENGERS. CRUISING SPEED 380/400 Kms.p.h. (236/248 m.p.h.). RANGE UP TO 2000 Kms.
The S.75, though it has the same power plant and general form as the S.83, is considerably larger.
Slot, flap and elevator treatment are shown well in this view of the S.83.
Essentially a civil version of the SIAI-Marchetti SM.79 three-engined bomber, the SM.83 was the smallest of the company’s trimotors and the prototype, I-LUCE, made its maiden flight in November 1938. This SM.83T (Terrestre), I-AZUR (c/n 34015), initially joined ALSA’s Atlantic Division, in whose colours it is seen here, but was transferred to the LATI fleet on the latter’s formation in September 1939.
One of the three LARES SM.83s seen in company livery in 1939. A fourth example was in private hands. They were bought in 1938, but returned to Italy in early 1941 in exchange for 21 Nardi FN.303 IV trainers.
Luggage on both 83 and 75 is stowed below the cockpit and cabins. Either two-position or constant-speed Savoia-Marchetti metal airscrews can be fitted.
The Savoia Marchetti S.79 (three Alfa-built Pegasus) on the right is "I-11," the winner of the Damascus race. It is one of the most arresting machines on show, in its red and green paint. In the background is the new Savoia S.83 transport developed from the S.79 design. This is said to be good for nearly 270 m.p.h.
The first of Sabena's new Savoia-Marchetti S83 machines which are intended eventually for use on the company’s Congo service. With three Wright-Cyclone G.2 engines this machine has a top speed of 268 m.p.h.
That the S.83 is no exception to the rule of neat grouping of controls and instruments on the modern transport machine may be gathered from the photograph.
