Walter Eichhorn took Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 D-FMBB, owned and restored by DASA (formerly MBB) in Germany, into the air from Manching on November 18, 1993, on its first flight after 6 1/2 years on the ground following an inflight seizure of its DB 605 engine.

Bristol Scout replica “N5419” has been acquired front the Royal Air Force Museum by the Bristol Aero Collection (BAC), which hopes to put it back in the air. Built by Leo Opdycke in the USA and completed in 1983, the Scout flew just once, magneto failure forcing it down into trees after 25min on its maiden flight. The repaired aircraft was acquired by the RAF Museum for static restoration 7 1/2 years ago, but pressure of other projects led to its being shelved. Transported to the BAC’s base at buildings provided by Meggitt plc in Banwell near Weston-super-Mare on October 30, 1994, the Scout now awaits refurbishment, recovering and the acquisition of a suitable rotary engine.

How many wings would you prefer, sir? A trio of Fokker replicas demonstrates the options. Sandwiched between Brian Coughlin’s D VIII monoplane and Cole Palen’s Dr I triplane is Palen’s recently-completed D VII, which is expected to be in full service at Old Rhinebeck during 1994. Powered by an original 200 h.p. Mercedes engine obtained from Kermit Weeks, the colourful D VII made its first flight in the hands of Ken Cassens on September 10 last year.

Currently being restored for static display at Castle Air Museum, Castle AFB, California, is Convair RB-36H 51-13730. Funded mainly by the USAF, a team of six people working three days a week is aiming to make the aircraft presentable by June 1994. By late 1993 the airframe had been assembled except for the rudder and some wing trailing-edge sections.

Former Yeovilton-based Royal Navy de Havilland Heron XM926 has migrated to Australia and is seen here after its ferry flight from the UK. Now VH-NJP with Heron Airlines at Bankstown, New South Wales, it joins the company’s other Heron which is maintained at Bankstown but operates from Sydney.

Australian de Havilland Dove 5 VH-DHD, seen here at Richmond, New South Wales, in 1988, crashed and was written off on take-off from Essendon, Melbourne, on the evening of December 3,1993. Owner/pilot Ted Rudge and the nine other occupants escaped with relatively minor injuries, but the crash has intensified calls for the airport’s closure.

Seen at Parafield, South Australia, on the occasion of the inaugural Wings and Wheels challenge on November 14, 1994, is Gloster Meteor F.8 A77-867. It carries the green-and-white chequered tail and wingtip markings of 77 Sqn RAAF, which operated Meteors in Korea.
