Also available in his US$450,000 package of Bf 109 parts are two cockpit sections, two aft fuselages, four pairs of wings, eight undercarriage legs, two fins, two tailplanes, various control surfaces, three DB 605 engines and one DB 601, a set of engine mounts, a cowling, a spinner, three prop hubs, armament and other items.

October 5, 1996 saw the first post-restoration flight of New Zealand collector Sir Tim Wallis’s Alpine Fighter Collection Spitfire Mk V AR614 at Audley End, the Essex base of Historic Flying Ltd. In what has become a routine, John Allison eased the fighter into the air for a brief test flight, later “landing away" at Duxford. The world’s 47th airworthy Spit, AR614 has been painted in the colours it wore with 312 (Czech) Sqn in 1943.

Photographed earlier this year at Vrede, South Africa, these Harvards belong to the “Harvard Club” based at Springs near Johannesburg, reports Mike Gaines. The club hopes eventually to operate ten aircraft as a “national memorial” to the type’s 55 years of SAAF service, which ended last year. These plans suffered a setback on the weekend of September 28-29, 1996, however, when one of the five Harvards acquired so far crashed at Pietersburg, killing both occupants.

Another interim winner in the Scania awards scheme is the Brooklands Museum’s Vickers Wellington, N2980 R-Robert. Like the RNHF Swordfish, it wins £500 and a place in next February’s final. In rewarding the museum for its efforts, the Scania judges cited the achievement of the aircraft’s rescuers - who salvaged the Wimpy from the peaty depths of Loch Ness in 1985 - and the technical complexity of the static restoration. Seen here with its unorthodox geodetic structure complete and partly covered, N2980 was also one of the leading contenders in Aeroplane’s own Preservation Project of the Year Award last year, and is attracting votes again this time round.

During “Heritage Days” held in France on September 14-15, 1996 the Musee de I’Air’s Dugny reserve collection was open to the public. One rarity on show was Martin B-26G-25-MA Marauder 44-68219, restored with the help of the Memorial Flight Association over the last two years. Fifty-six of this last production variant flew with the Armee de I’Air’s 31eme and 34eme escadres de bombardement moyen (medium bomber wings).

Tiger Moth G-ASKP arrived at Acebell Aviation, Redhill, on September 13, 1996 for repairs following a landing accident at Westbury-sub-Mendip. The same Tiger ditched off Italy in February during an attempted England-Cape Town flight.

This Auster AOP.9, XR246/G-AZBU, returned to the air in June 1996. Operated by the Auster Nine group, the 1961 spotter was used for radio trials by the Royal Aircraft Establishment (hence the distinctive colour scheme, unique to UK Austers) before its acquisition by autogyro maestro Ken Wallis. Stored for 20 years until its rebuild, ’246 joins the group’s other flyers, XP282 and XK417; two more AOP.9s are under restoration.
