Kermit Weeks’s Boeing B-17 44-83525 Suzy Q, blown on to a railway line when Hurricane Andrew hit the Weeks Air Museum at Tamiami Airport, Florida, three years ago, is being rebuilt by Tom Reilly at nearby Kissimmee. Reilly is currently working on the wings; the fuselage, seen here, will receive attention in due course. The Flying Fortress will eventually be based at Weeks's new Fantasy of Flight Museum at Polk City.

Jim Porter and Dick Hansen have painted their airworthy Wildcat to represent an aircraft flown by Ensign “Butch" O’Hare, who, on his first combat mission with Fighter Squadron 3 (VF-3), operating from the USS Lexington on February 20, 1942, shot down five Japanese bombers.

The Ulster Aviation Society’s Wildcat IV JV482, recovered from Portmore Lough 11 years ago, is gradually having its fuselage skins replaced as part of a painstaking project to restore it to pristine static condition.

Another Wildcat from Lake Michigan, General Motors-built FM-1 BuNo 14994, is being restored to static condition for the US Naval Air Museum at Pensacola by Valiant Air Command (VAC) members and volunteers at Titusville, Florida. The FM-1 clipped a wing on landing and went over the side of the carrier USS Wolverine in mid-January 1945. The aircraft was assigned to the VAC last year, and restoration is expected to take 2-3 years. Note the fine state of preservation, with colours, markings and codes still clearly visible.

The first time since the 1940s that two Spitfires have raced together in the USA: the Santa Monica Museum of Flying’s Mk IX and Mk XIV took part in the Phoenix 500 earlier this year. They should be at the Spitfire meeting in Arizona during October 1995.

Supermarine Spitfire IX EN199, its static restoration recently completed by the Malta Aviation Museum Foundation, has been on display in Valletta’s Palace Square as part of the George Cross island’s VE-Day 50th Foundation plans to set up an aviation museum at the former wartime airfield of Ta’Qali to house the Spitfire and other aircraft including a Hurricane, a DC-3 and a Beech 18.

Following a meticulous 12-year restoration at Cardington, the wooden hull of Supermarine Southampton N9899 - used as a houseboat in Essex from 1928 to 1968 - arrived al the RAF Museum at Hendon on May 23, 1994. Already on show to the public, the intricate structure is to be made more accessible by the addition of a viewing platform.
