  • Eight Harrier T12/12As and 50 Harrier GR7/7A/9/9As arrived for storage with the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, in April 2012. The aircraft constitute the majority of the 72 sold by the British to the United States in 2011. They will be used as a source of spares to keep the US Marine Corps' AV-8B fleet in service into the mid-2020s.

  • AgustaWestland AW101-643 ZR337 (c/n 50245) was delivered to the Turkmenistan Government as EZ-S715 on June 16, 2012. It is the first of two to be handed over and will soon be joined by ZR336 (c/n 50241). Turkmenistan ordered the two aircraft in a WIP configuration in November 2010.

  • Noted on May 31, 2012 flying from Yeovil, Somerset, was the first Indian Air Force AgustaWestland AW101-643 VVIP helicopter. The aircraft wears the UK military serial ZR338 but also carries '001' behind the cockpit. It recently completed its first flight and is the first of 12 ordered by India in March 2010. The €560 million deal includes five years of logistic support and initial aircrew and technician training. Delivery of the first aircraft is expected towards the end of 2012.

  • One of the six upgraded Japan Air Self Defense Force Mitsubishi F-15MJ Eagles that attended Red Flag-Alaska 12-2 at Eielson AFB, Alaska, taxies across a wet ramp to its parking spot. The upgrade includes a Link 16 and a new radar warning receiver, but the fighter still retains the original AN/APG-63(v)1 radar. This example is operated by 303 Squadron at Komatsu AB. Red Flag 12-2 was held between June 7 and 22, 2012.

  • F-16AM Fighting Falcon 686 has been painted in a special red, white, blue and chrome colour scheme and will be used as the Luftforsvaret's (Royal Norwegian Air Force) display aircraft in 2012. This year marks the centenary of Norwegian military airpower, and Major Eskil Amdal will fly display routines at various airshows in the aircraft to mark the anniversary. It made its first appearance at the Bernt Balchen Airshow at Kjevik Airport in Kristiansand, home of the Luftforsvarets Skolesenter (Air Force School Centre) on May 12.

  • Turkish Land Forces' Sikorsky S-70A-28D Black Hawk 14308 was deployed to Afghanistan in early May 2012 to support the International Security Assistance Force. The helicopter - an attrition replacement for one that crashed in December 2011 with the loss of 12 personnel on board and four civilians on the ground - was loaded onto a US Air Force Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport at Incirlik Air Base on May 5 and delivered to Kabul Airport.

  • Belgian Air Component Agusta A109BA H-24 (c/n 0324) is seen at Florennes AB on May 22, 2012. The helicopter is the solo A109 display aircraft for the 2012 season and has been painted with representations of the badges of 17 and 18 Squadrons on its rear fuselage. Both are based at Beauvechain and assigned to the 1st Wing. In addition, the helicopter carries inscriptions recording the fleet's 100,000 flight hours during its 20 years of service from 1992.

  • Dassault Rafale C 102/'118-EF' from Escadron de Chasse et d'Experimentation 5/330 'Cote d'Argent' wearing what many considered the most striking scheme at Arctic Tiger 2012. Its 'Spirit of Experimentations' nose markings relate to the trials work undertaken by the unit, which is based at Mont-de-Marsan.

  • Saudia became the 16th full member of the SkyTeam alliance on May 29, 2012. The carrier has recently been rebranded, changing its name from Saudi Arabian Airlines back to Saudia, which it was known as between 1972 and 1996. Boeing 777-268(ER) HK-AKA (c/n 28344, ex N50217) was repainted in the alliance's colours at Amsterdam in the Netherlands and is seen on its ferry flight back to Jeddah on May 27. Middle East Airlines, Aerolineas Argentinas and Xiamen Airlines are all due to join the SkyTeam alliance later this year.

  • Embraer ERJ-135ER G-CGMB (c/n 145189, ex F-GOHA) has been painted in this 'Best of British 2012' scheme by Eastern Airways to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II. The regional jet is seen on approach to Palma de Mallorca on May 19, 2012 after a charter flight from Munich, Germany. Eastern Airways operates a fleet of 30 aircraft that fly scheduled services to 21 airports in the UK, Norway, Belgium and France, as well as charter operations.

  • Fuerza Aerea Mexicana (FAM, Mexican Air Force) Boeing 727-264 FAM-3505 (c/n 22661, ex XA-MXA) is seen on approach to Toronto Lester B Pearson International Airport, Ontario in Canada, on May 18, 2012. Operated by Escuadron Aereo 502, Grupo Aereo No 3, from General Alfredo Lezama Alavrez Air Base, Santa Lucia, the aircraft was in Canada transporting a group of military personnel to various installations, having also visited several sites in the United States. It flew with Mexicana as Acapulco before being acquired by the FAM in October 2002, one of ten Boeing 727s that have been used by the Mexican Government and military over the years.

  • Sukhoi Su-27UBM2 Flanker '50' yellow of the Kazakhstan Air Defence Force was demonstrated at the KADEX 2012 trade show held at Astana in Kazakhstan between May 3 and 6, 2012. At least two two-seat Flankers have been upgraded in Belarus by Aviaremontniy Zavod and were redelivered in 2009 as part of a contract for ten aircraft (the others being single-seaters) signed in September 2007. The Su-27UBM2 is assigned to the 604th Air Base at Taldykorgan, near Almaty in eastern Kazakhstan. This aircraft has a Litening targeting pod on a hardpoint under its port intake.

  • Seen at Miami International Airport in Florida, in late May 2012 was Airbus A300-203F Freighter N821SC (msn 211, ex TC-ALU). The aircraft was recently acquired by Transcarga International Airways of Caracas, Venezuela, on lease from Sky Lease Cargo so that it could start cargo flights to Miami. However, on May 29 it was ferried to Sanford Airport in Orlando for storage.

  • Sweden's largest regional airline, Skyways Express and its subsidiary City Airline, filed for bankruptcy on May 22, 2012, cancelling all its flights on the same day. According to Mikael Wangdahl, the Chief Executive Officer of Skyways, the decision was taken after its owners decided to stop funding its operation. Around 350 people are employed by the company, while approximately 12,000 passengers had tickets that became invalid after the flights were cancelled. Fokker 50 SE-LEU (c/n 20115, ex 9M-MGZ) is one of ten of the turboprops operated by the airline, all on lease. Skyways flew to around 20 destinations, primarily in Sweden, but also to other countries around the Baltic and in Switzerland, the Ukraine and United Kingdom.

  • British Aerospace RJ85 EI-RJX (c/n E2372, ex N536XJ) of Irish regional CityJet has been painted in this special scheme to mark the airline's role as official carrier of the Leinster Rugby team. The aircraft was used to fly the team to the Rugby Heineken Cup final against Ulster in London on May 19, 2012. Leinster emerged victorious on the day, with the final score being 42 to 14. The regional jet is seen on May 17 outside the CityJet hanger at Dublin Airport in Ireland.

  • Flown by Flt Lt Phil Bird, British Aerospace Hawk T1A XX278 of No.208 Squadron of No.4 Flying Training School based at RAF Valley, Anglesey, will be displayed in these special colours during the 2012 season. The aircraft was rolled out of the paint shop at RAF Valley on May 30, 2012 and is seen during the Families Day at RAF Leeming in Yorkshire on June 9.

  • Short C-23A Sherpa N168LM (c/n SH-3104, ex N174Z) is one of around three examples of the SD3-30/C-23 flown by Era Alaska. Originally built for the US Air Force, the aircraft was passed on to the US Department of the Interior in October 1991, serving with the Bureau of Land Management as a platform for smokejumpers in the blue and white scheme it still retains. It was sold to Air Cargo Carriers in 2000 before being registered to Era Alaska's owners in September 2010.

  • The first of the new batch of Pilatus PC-7 Mk II Turbo Trainers for the Botswana Defence Force Air Wing (c/n 685, to become OD1) completed its maiden flight on May 14, 2012. The trainer undertook its initial engine tests at the Pilatus facility at Stans, Switzerland, six days earlier. The aircraft is seen after a test flight on May 15 and is due to enter service with 7.7 based at Thebephatshwa, with which Botswana's existing PC-7s are currently assigned. Delivery of the five aircraft ordered in April 2011 is planned for early in 2013.

  • On June 1, 2012, the Fuerza Aerea Boliviana (Bolivian Air Force) received four Robinson R44 lights helicopters for training use with Grupo Aereo 22. The helicopters were received at the Colegio Militar de Aviation at El Trompillo airport, in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, during celebrations to mark 60 years of the institution. They join an initial pair of Raven IIs (including FAB-761) which have been in service since July 2011.

  • The Airborne Electronic Attack Weapons School (AEAWS) of the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center currently has two Boeing EA-18G Growler airborne electronic attack aircraft in service at NAS Fallon, Nevada. They are BuNos 168274/'501' (seen here) and 168273/'500'. The AEAWS was established in November 2011 to provide electronic attack squadrons with techniques, tactics and procedures to employ the aircraft.

  • BAE Systems Hawk T2 ZA020/'K' has received this special scheme to celebrate 100 years of No.IV(R) Squadron. The aircraft emerged from the paint shop at RAF Valley, Anglesey, on June 8, 2012 and is seen the following day at the families' event held at RAF Leeming in Yorkshire. The unit was formed as No.4 Squadron on September 16, 1912, at Farnborough, Hampshire, relocating to Netheravon in Wiltshire soon after. In recent years it served as a frontline squadron with, and then conversion unit for, the Harrier GR9/9A at RAF Cottesmore, Rutland, and RAF Wittering, Cambridgeshire, before reforming on the Hawk T2 at RAF Valley on November 24, 2011, as the RAF's fast jet tactical weapons training unit.

  • The second prototype Chengdu J-20 is believed to have made its maiden flight on May 16, 2012 at the 611 Institute airfield at Chengdu. Images of the aircraft in the air began to appear on Chinese internet sites on that date. In comparison to the first aircraft ('2001'), '2002' has its pitot tube repositioned on the nose, while the large main landing gear doors, which appear to be open for take-off and landing on the first aircraft, are closed on the second during those phases of flight. The first J-20 departed for the Chinese flight-test establishment at Yanliang near the city of Xian on May 11, possibly signalling the start of state trials.

  • Seen recently at Kazan in Russia was this Mil Mi-17V-5 destined for the Egyptian Air Force. The helicopter is armed with 80mm rocket pods, twin 23mm cannon pods and 12.7mm machine-guns mounted in the door and rear window. It is part of an order for 20 placed by Egypt with the Kazan Helicopter Plant.

  • Flight trials of Sikorsky MH-16 Seahawks destined for the Brazilian Navy continue, with delivery now expected to take place later this year. An initial batch of four helicopters was purchased to replace the Sea Kings of HS-1, based at Sao Pedro da Aldeia, near Rio de Janeiro, followed by an additional order for two more. They were originally expected to be handed over in pairs in February and May 2012, with the final two being delivered in September 2014. N1025J is the last of the original batch of four and is expected to become N-3035 after delivery.

  • Scandinavian Airlines' McDonnell Douglas MD-87 OY-KHU (c/n 53336, named Ravn Viking) was used to transport the Danish national football team during the UEFA Euro 2012 competition held in Poland and Ukraine in June 2012. The airliner carries Danish national football association (DBU) stickers as well as 'UEFA Euro 2012 National Team' titles on the fuselage. During the competition the aircraft was based at Szczecin, Poland.

  • MetroJet, a new joint venture between TUI Russia and CIS, and Kolavia Airlines based at Surgut in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, has starting flying passengers. The airline operates under the TUI brand and offers services from Russia to Turkey, Egypt and Spain. The first aircraft painted with its titles (on its nose) is Airbus A321-231 EI-ETJ (msn 663, ex TC-OAE), seen landing at Palma de Mallorca in early June 2012 after completing a charter flight from Moscow Domodedovo. Kolavia leased the airliner from the International Lease and Finance Company on March 30 and it was ferried to Moscow Domodedovo on April 27 prior to entering service.
