ONE OF the earliest designs for an aircraft is the centrepiece of an enticing new exhibition at the Science Museum in South Kensington, London. A full-sized model of Leonardo da Vinci’s man-powered ornithopter hangs above the entrance to The Art of Invention: Leonardo and the Renaissance Engineers, which opened on October 15, 1999 and runs until April 24 next year.

Регистрационный номер: F-BHHF On August 20, 1999, Morane-Saulnier MS.317 F-BHHF, c/n 312, flew again following a four-year restoration by a team of volunteers at the Musee Aeronautique de la Presqu’lle-Cote d’Amour in La Baule, Northern France. Originally built as an MS.315 in 1946, the Morane was upgraded to MS.317 configuration in 1964, when its 135 h.p. Salmson 9Ac radial engine was replaced by a 220 h.p Continental W-670. During the 1960s and 1970s many MS.317s served as glider tugs. The Musee Aeronautique acquired its aircraft from the Musee de I’Air in 1994, in exchange for a restored Mauboussin Corsair and some other artefacts. It has been given the colours of an Armee de I’Air machine, and is seen here flying over the salt swamps near La Baule.
