THE NEWARK AIR MUSEUM took delivery of a MiG-23 Flogger and a MiG-27 Flogger-D (shown) on May 21, 2002, on loan from Hawarden Air Services. They are the first of each type on show in a museum in Britain; museum trustee David Hibbert says, "A MiG fighter has been on our wish list for 15 years. We are sure they will be very popular with visitors"

SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE Mk IX TE566 was destroyed in a crash that took the life of its owner, Mike Snoyman, at Wonderboom Airport in Pretoria, South Africa, on April 25, 2002. The fighter had been exported to South Africa in 1998, following six years of operation by the Historic Aircraft Collection at shows in Britain and Europe following its first post-restoration flight at Audley End in July 1992.

THE CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED FILM Dark Blue World was released in Britain on May 10, 2002, and those who have already seen it cannot have failed to be impressed by the flying sequences, co-ordinated by the Duxford-based Old Flying Machine Company, reports Pavel Kucera. Filming took place at Hradcany in the Czech Republic during the summer of 2000, the film makers also contracting Prague-based restorers company BMZ Air Service to provide aircraft and technical assistance for the production. BMZ built the mock-up Spitfire cockpit sections used during filming of battle scenes (shown). The structures were built of wood, but some original internal fittings were used, including Instruments, a spadegrip control column, and a genuine metal seat originally fitted to a Hawker Hurricane.

Hawker Sea Fury T.20 N51SF recently arrived at at Van Nuys airport in Los Angeles for new owner Paul Besterveld. The Wright R-3350-powered machine currently wears Australian roundel roundels, but Besterveld, who is from the Netherlands, intends to have Dutch Navy insignia applied to the fighter.

ON MAY 14, 2002, Fairey Firefly AS.5 WB271 of the Royal Navy Historic Flight made a brief ten-minute test flight at Yeovilton following a five-year rebuild. The pilot, Dave Mackay, curtailed the flight owing to an oil circulation problem, but that was soon rectified by the engineers at the Flight. The test flying programme was due to recommence on May 21, before a busy first weekend of public appearances on June 2-3, where the Firefly was due to be seen at the Biggin Hill Air Fair, the Southend seafront airshow, the Chatham Navy Days and a Channel Dash commemoration at Manston.

THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY of the introduction to RAF Training Command of the Folland Gnat T.1 will be celebrated at the Kemble Air Day on June 16, 2002, with four of the svelte little jets expected to fly in formation. Leading the four will be Delta Jets' Kemble-based T.1 XR538/G-RORI (seen here on March 28, 2002), which was recently repainted in the 4FTS scheme it wore when issued to RAF Valley in July 1963. The current pilot of XR538, Dave Roome, is no stranger to this machine, having flown it in September 1966 while training at RAF Valley.

IN CLEVELAND, OHIO, the Six Flags Theme Park has a semi-replica Grumman Avenger on display as part of a “Bermuda Triangle" attraction. Utilising some original Avenger parts, and complete with replica barnacles, seaweed and salt corrosion, the exhibit recalls the five aircraft lost in the Atlantic Ocean somewhere in the mythical triangle between Bermuda, Puerto Rico and Fort Lauderdale during a training flight from the Naval Air Station at Fort Lauderdale on December 5, 1945. The “Flight 19” incident is one of the cornerstones of the popular myths which have arisen since the late 1960s.

WITH THE RESTORATION of the Royal Australian Air Force Museum Supermarine Walrus now completed work is getting under way at Point Cook on the rebuild of the Museum’s de Havilland Mosquito PR.XVI, A52-600. The historic machine has the most distinguished operational history of any missions in the Pacific Theatre in 1945.

ON MAY 9, 2002, at Chino, California, for the first time in about half a century, a Supermarine Spitfire left the ground using the thrust from of a pair of contra-rotating propellers. Owned by the Planes of Fame Museum, Spitfire PR.XIX PS890 has been fitted with a Rolls-Royce Griffon 57A engine from an Avro Shackleton, turning cutdown Shackleton propellers.
