The Empire Test Pilots School was resident at Farnborough from 1946 until 1968 occupying the hangar on the south side of the airfield, this now being used today as the civil enclave. In this view are some of the ETPS fleet at Farnborough during 1961. These include a Vampire T.11, Meteor NF.14, Meteor T.7, Hunter F.4, Hunter T.7, Dragonfly HR3, Devon C.1, Shackleton MR.2, Canberra B.2, Swift F.7 and Chipmunk T 10.

LIFE SAVER. During the last war, aircraft of Bomber Command had their sorties recorded by a bomb painted on the nose, while Fighter Command's method was a Swastika for every enemy aircraft destroyed. The Royal Navy appear to have adopted this scoreboard method for their rescue helicopters. For every person saved an image of a man is painted on the nose of their machines. I took these photographs at the R.N.A.S. Station at Abbotsinch, and this particular helicopter was one of those used to rescue forty-one men from the motor-vessel Dover-fjell. Note folded rotors.

The Flying Bedstead Mk II, naval version, being given assistance by a RNAS Ford Westland Dragonfly. The primative PO WWR (Wave Warning Radar) can be seen trailing in the traditional position beneath the bed. The type did not go into production.

Sikorsky-built S-51 G-AJOR, named Sir Owen in BEA service, was one of four operated by the airline in the early days of its helicopter fleet, and was powered by a single vertically-mounted 450 h.p. Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior B4 radial piston engine. This example served with BEA until it was sold to Autair Helicopters in July 1953.

With the remains of the futuristic Dome of Discovery in the background, Reggie Brie brings G-AJOR into the South Bank site. Brie had long been an advocate of the helicopter for city-centre operations, and had suggested floating landing platforms in the Thames as far back as the late 1930s.

Sporting the Expo ’58 star logo on its nose and Sabena colours, Westland Widgeon G-ANLW served with the airline for the duration of the exhibition. It later went on to appear in some dynamic flying sequences in the obscure 1974 film Caravan to Vaccares. It is now on display at the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton.
