Saab JAS 39 Gripen

Saab Viggen.

The first prototype Gripen is seen here during the unveiling ceremony which took place on 26 April last to coincide with the 50 th Anniversary of the creation of what is now the Saab Aircraft Division of Saab-Scania as the Svenska Aeroplan AB.
This photograph of the first prototype of the Gripen, the JAS 39-1, taken at Linkoping on the evening prior to the official unveiling (on 26 April last) of this new multi-role fighter, reveals the aesthetically attractive lines that have been attained by the Saab design team. This aircraft is expected to be joined in the flight test programme during the latter part of next year by the JAS 39-2, with -3, -4 and -5 following at approximately six-monthly intervals. The first prototype will be primarily occupied with aerodynamic testing and exploration of the performance envelope, successive prototypes being devoted to avionics, weaponry trials, etc. Although the Gripen is optimised for the unique Swedish defence demands, which include the ability to operate from 875-yard (800-m ) strips of motorway, Saab-Scania believes that it will offer good export potential, particularly when the Growth II and III versions of the RM 12 become available for installation.
Now about to start its flight test programme, somewhat later than originally scheduled, the Saab 39 Gripen is expected to be the next major combat aircraft for the Swedish Air Force.
During a visit to a Swedish Air Force base last summer the Gripen was displayed with its range of weapons including AIM-9 Sidewinders in the foreground, Skyflash AAMs, Mavericks, rocket pods, DWS 39 weapon dispensers and RBS-15F anti-ship missiles (far left and right).
During the author’s recent visit to Linkoping, the second prototype was undertaking compatibility trials with the Maverick ASM, four drill rounds being carried on the underwing pylons.

This view of the fourth prototype gives an indication of just how compact the Gripen is.
Devoid of the now familiar Saab ‘house’ colours, the first serial JAS 39 Gripen, No 101, carries ‘Svenska Flygvapnet’ markings and joined the four prototypes in the test programme following its first flight on September 10, 1992. It will shortly transfer to the FMV for Swedish Air Force trials.

With the vogue for canard configurations, such as the Saab Gripen seen here, aircraft design has turned full circle. The Wright Flier was also an unstable canard. However, there the similarity ends with current fighters being designed to ensure favourable interaction between canard and foreplane vortices to increase total lift.

Flygvapnet JAS 39C/D squadrons do not have their own airframes; all Gripens are shared amongst each wing. Inset: Cross-border training between Sweden, Norway and Finland involves a range of scenarios, including weapon delivery against ground and airborne targets, combating simulated anti-aircraft artillery, low-level flying and air-to-air refuelling.

Spectacular Saabs. From left to right, the aircraft are JAS39C Gripen, 39227/'27'; J 35F Draken, 35610/'56-10' of the Veteran Flying Unit (VFU), at F7 Wing in Satenas; Sk60A, 60102/'102' from the F17M Wing, at Malmlatt AFB; J 32D Lansen 32606/'06-04' of the VFU; and Sk 37E Viggen, 37809/TC-09'. Conspicuous by its absence was the VFU's J29F Tunnan, 29570, that had suffered an engine failure shortly before the anniversary airshow. A replacement engine has since been fitted, but at the time of writing (September 6, 2007) it was still grounded due to a slight fuel leak. It is interesting to note the double-delta/canard aerodynamic similarity between the Draken, Viggen and Gripen; configurations determined by the need for uncompromised performance at low and supersonic speeds.

During its 70 years, Saab has produced over 4,000 military and commercial aircraft of 15 types, culminating in the Gripen. It is destined to remain in service with the SwAF (and probably many other air forces) at least until 2037, when Saab is due to celebrate its centenary. However, the JAS 39C seen here, may by then have been superseded bya larger and more developed variant based on the studies about to begin with the technology demonstrator.

There are also four weeks each year during which F 21 only flies night sorties, to compensate for the sorties cancelled due to weather.
JAS 39C Gripens are expected to continue in service with the Swedish Air Force well past 2030. The aircraft’s open architecture avionics system allows them to be upgraded relatively easy - the example shown here at F 21 Lulea in May 2019 is fitted with the Meteor BVRAAM

Eurofighter Typhoon.
A formal ceremony was held at Kecskemet Air Base, Hungary, on January 28, 2008 to mark the official acceptance of the final three Saab JAS39 Gripens to be delivered to the Hungarian Air Force. All three aircraft had been flown to the base on December 13 from the FMV facility at Linkoping, Sweden, bringing Hungary up to its full strength of 14, comprising 12 single-seat JAS39Cs and two twin-seat JAS39Ds. All 14 Gripens are seen here lined up at Kecskemet on January 28 in readiness for the formal ceremony.

To facilitate engine maintenance in crowded rock shelters, the GE/Volvo RM 12 (F404) turbofan can be dropped down and removed in a comparatively short time.
The RM 12, the first flight test example of which is seen here in process of installation in the JAS 39-1 Gripen, has been developed by Volvo Flygmotor in collaboration with General Electric from the latter company's F404-GE-400. Optimised for Gripen installation, the RM 12 offers a substantially improved performance over that of its progenitor, and successively more powerful versions are in prospect from the early through the mid-'nineties.
