Cessna Model 305 (L-19/O-l Bird Dog)

Cessna Model 305A.

Cessna O-1D serial 57-2903 was transferred from the Royal Lao Air Force to the KAF in February 1974 for KAF pilot training at Udorn in Thailand, before being sent to Pochentong that June, when it was officially transferred to the KAF inventory for active service.

The fin serial number of this Cessna O-1 Bird Dog, 503-04, identifies it as the fourth example completed by the No 503 Workshop at Dhamial. Although Pakistan has no manufacturing license from Cessna for this activity, new O-1s are being assembled from a combination of US-supplied spares and locally-manufactured parts.

The Cessna L-19A Bird Dogs which arrived in Lebanon from US Army stocks in West Germany were much more suitable for the observation role than the Sk 16As, which were little used from that point on. The Bird Dog had been designed from the outset as a liaison and observation aircraft, its high-wing configuration offering excellent visibility and its flat-six Continental engine proving much more economical.

Twenty-five Cessna OE-2 are now being delivered to the U.S. Marine Corps as two-seat general utility A.O.P.s. The OE-2 is based on the four-seat Model 180, and is the successor of the L-19A and OE-1 Bird Dog. Most noticeable re-design is the tail assembly. The 265-h.p. Continental O-470-4 permits a 70 per cent METO cruise of 152 m.p.h. at 5,000 ft. for maximum weight of 2,650 lb.
