Fokker F27 Friendship
В конце Второй мировой войны компания "Fokker" потратила некоторое время на разработку концепции нового авиалайнера средней дальности полета. К проектным работам по самолету вместимостью 32 пассажира и с двумя ТВД Rolls-Royce Dart приступили в 1950 году. На стадии НИОКР самолет получил шифр P.275. Самолет получил окончательное обозначение F27 Friendship. Первый из двух прототипов выполнил первый полет 24 ноября 1955 года с двумя двигателями Dart Mk 507. F27 Friendship - цельнометаллический моноплан с гермокабиной, убираемым шасси с носовой опорой, рассчитанный на перевозку 28 пассажиров. На втором прототипе установили ТВД Dart Mk 511, а фюзеляж удлинили на 0,91 м для размещения 32 пассажиров; первый полет выполнен 31 января 1957 года.
В промежутке между первыми полетами двух прототипов "Fokker" договорилась с компаниями "Fairchild Engine" и "Airplane Corporation" из США о производстве и продажах самолетов в Северной Америке под обозначением Fairchild F-27.
Первый серийный F27 постройки "Fokker" начали эксплуатировать в "Aer Lingus" в декабре 1958 года, но американская "Fairchild" несколько опередила головного разработчика - эксплуатация F-27 в авиакомпании "West Coast Airlines" началась на три месяца раньше. Первым серийным вариантом голландской постройки стал Fokker F27 Friendship Mk 100 (Fairchild F-27) с двумя ТВД Dart RDa.6 Mk 514-7 мощностью по 1715 л. с. За ним последовал Fokker F27 Friendship Mk 200 (Fairchild F-27A) с двумя ТВД Dart RDa.7 Mk 532-7R мощностью по 2140 л.с. Оба варианта в стандартной конфигурации перевозили 40 пассажиров, но в варианте эконом-класса могли брать на борт 52 пассажира. По желанию заказчика выполняли и эксклюзивные конфигурации салонов.
Очередным серийным вариантом стал грузопассажирский Fokker F27 Friendship Mk 300 Combiplane (Fairchild F-27B) с силовой установкой, как у Mk 100, усиленным полом салона и большим грузовым люком в левом борту фюзеляжа перед крылом. Аналогичный Combiplane строился на основе Mk 200 под обозначением Fokker F27 Friendship Mk400, но эквивалента постройки компании "Fairchild" не существовало. Далее Fokker разработала удлиненный на 1,50 м вариант Mk 200 - F27 Friendship Mk 500. Поначалу перевозчики не проявили большого интереса к данной версии - лишь правительство Франции закупило 15 самолетов для "Postale de Nuit". Позже авиакомпаниям поставлялись Mk 500 в стандартной конфигурации на 52 пассажира и в экономическом варианте на 60 пассажиров. "Fairchild" спроектировала собственный удлиненный вариант FH-227.
Последний серийный вариант Fokker F27 Friendship Mk 600 сочетал фюзеляж Mk 200 (без усиленного пола кабины) с грузовой дверью по типу Mk 300 и Mk 400 Combiplane. На Mk 600 предусмотрена быстрая замена пассажирского интерьера грузовым с монтажом роликовых направляющих.
К другим серийным вариантам относятся военные F27 Friendship Mk 400M и F27 Friendship Mk 500M. Патрульный F27 Mk 400M и морской патрульный F27 Maritime (F27MPA) предназначены для патрулирования прибрежных акваторий, контроля за рыболовными промыслами, выполнения поисково-спасательных операций. Поздние серийные самолеты отличались кабинами с более современным приборным оборудованием и новым интерьером. К серийному производству привлекались французская "Dassault-Breguet", германская MBB и бельгийская SABCA.
Производство продолжалось до 1987 года, когда на смену F27 пришел более совершенный Fokker 50. Всего построили 786 самолетов - 579 машин F27, 128 - F-27 и 79 - FH-227; в середине 1999 года в эксплуатации находились 444 самолета.

Seventy of these short-nosed 40-passenger F.27s were produced - they had a 40,500lb maximum take-off gross weight and were powered by two 1,670shp Rolls-Royce Dart R. Da.6 Mk.514-7 turboprops. Aer Lingus operated seven F.27 Mk 100s and later, eight of the modernised Fokker 50s under the Aer Lingus Commuter subsidiary.

Air Anglia was one of the first UK airlines to use the F.27 together with the Fokker F.28 Fellowship shortly before the company was merged with several other small UK airlines to form AirUK.

Fokker F.27 Mk 400M, 5-2601, (c/n 10509) is reportedly flown by Sahand Airlines on behalf of the Iranian Navy. The latter is one of over 40 operators still using the F.27, many of them military. This aircraft operates flights to Tehran from Bandar Abas (once a week) and other southern Iranian cities (less frequently). The F.27 Mk 400M is based on the F.27 Mk 300 but has military equipment, a strengthened floor and interior, forward cargo hatch and twin parachute doors at the rear.

The carrier went into liquidation in 1992 and the present-day Norwegian Air Shuttle - which now trades as Norwegian - was formed from the remnants of Busy Bee in 1993.

The turboprop is fitted out as a flying hospital, specialising in eye surgery, and operates in Africa. It is equipped for a crew of 12, including doctors and technicians, with two operating theatres, plus an area for the sterilisation of instruments, while a collapsible tent can be attached to the cargo door to provide room for two recovery beds. The organisation plans to sell the Fokker, for which spares are becoming difficult and expensive to source, and is looking for support to acquire an ATR 42 or, preferably, an ATR 72 - details can be found on www.canguroaid.org.

Converted regional airliners can make admirable maritime patrol aircraft, offering useful cabin volume for operators and equipment, economical operating costs and low development costs. The Fokker F.27 Maritime Enforcer, in service with the Royal Thai Navy, is a classic example of how such an aircraft can be modified. It has been fitted with two stub pylons on the fuselage sides and six underwing pylons for a variety of stores including torpedoes, depth charges and rocket pods.
Fokker's F.27 proved successful worldwide. Not only was it popular with many airlines, but a number of air arms also ordered the type: the Royal Thai Navy, for example, operates the F.27 Mk 400M and a maritime patrol variant (pictured), the F.27 Mk 200ME Maritime Enforcer.

The Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation intends to build the Friendship under licence in the United States . A production line of fifty is planned for the Amsterdam factory, two of which have already been ordered by K.L.M.-Royal Dutch Airlines.

A Fokker F27 has now entered service at Edinburgh for fisheries protection duties in Scotland, operated by Harvest Air on behalf of the DAFS. Previously operated by Air UK, the F27 Mk 200 went through a 21-week overhaul and modification programme with the latter company, during which it was fitted with centre-section bladder tanks a modification never previously made retrospectively to an F27.
