Fokker F.27 Mk 100 Friendship, EI-AKA, (c/n 10105) of Aer Lingus. Seventy of these short-nosed 40-passenger F.27s were produced - they had a 40,500lb maximum take-off gross weight and were powered by two 1,670shp Rolls-Royce Dart R. Da.6 Mk.514-7 turboprops. Aer Lingus operated seven F.27 Mk 100s and later, eight of the modernised Fokker 50s under the Aer Lingus Commuter subsidiary.

The F27 Mk 100 EI-AKA "St Fintan" was the first production Friendship (c/n 10105), first flown as PH-FAA on 23 March 1958. It entered service with Aer Lingus at the end of 1958 and went to New Zealand after refurbishing by Fokker in 1966, for service with NZNAC and later Air New Zealand.

Fokker F.27 Mk 200 Friendship, G-BAUR, (c/n 10225) of Air Anglia. The F.27 Mk 200 improvements over the Mk 100 series provided an increased fuel capacity, 45,000lb maximum take-off gross weight, the ability to carry up to 44 passengers, a radar nose and more powerful 1,870shp Rolls-Royce Dart R.Da.7 Mk 528 engines. Air Anglia was one of the first UK airlines to use the F.27 together with the Fokker F.28 Fellowship shortly before the company was merged with several other small UK airlines to form AirUK.

Fokker F.27 Mk 500 Friendship, F-BPNB, (c/n 10367) of Air Inter Europe, circa 1982. This variant incorporates a number of improvements over the F.27 Mk 400, including 5ft fuselage extensions, additional windows, a 56-passenger capacity and longer stroke undercarriage. The airline operated four different versions of the F.27, including eleven F.27 Mk 500s, most of which ended up with FedEx as cargo aircraft.

Fokker F27 Mk 300M, one of nine such versions acquired by the Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Royal Netherlands Air Force), together with three Mk 100s, in 1960-61. It was first flown in the civil marking PH-FBT and was later equipped as an ECM trainer. The insignia of No 334 Squadron (Motto: "Always and everywhere") is carried on the fin.

F27 Mk 400 6W-STB (c/n 10565) is one of six Friendships acquired by the Senegal Air Force in 1978 and since 1981, part of the Senegambia Air Force following the confederation between Senegal and Gambia. First flown on 14 October 1977, 6W-STB was named "Bargny".

Fokker F.27 Mk 400M, 5-2601, (c/n 10509) is reportedly flown by Sahand Airlines on behalf of the Iranian Navy. The latter is one of over 40 operators still using the F.27, many of them military. This aircraft operates flights to Tehran from Bandar Abas (once a week) and other southern Iranian cities (less frequently). The F.27 Mk 400M is based on the F.27 Mk 300 but has military equipment, a strengthened floor and interior, forward cargo hatch and twin parachute doors at the rear.

One of the first air-to-air photographs of the prototype Fokker F.27 Friendship, PH-NIV, shows to good effect the massive dorsal fin fillet and the compactness of the mid-mounted Rolls-Royce Dart 507 turboprops - each of 1.540 e.s.h.p. The first production model of this 28-36 passenger "DC-3 replacement" will be flying in 1957. This version will be powered by two 1,680 e.s.h.p. Dart 511s. The Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation intends to build the Friendship under licence in the United States . A production line of fifty is planned for the Amsterdam factory, two of which have already been ordered by K.L.M.-Royal Dutch Airlines.

On November 24, 1955, Fokker’s F.27 Friendship prototype, PH-NIV, made its first flight - powered, like the Dart Herald and 748, by a pair of Rolls-Royce Dart turboprops. The type would go on to be a major success for the company, some 787 examples being built by the parent company and under licence by Fairchild Hiller in the USA.

Since the foundation of the FFA a great number of activities have been organised including an exhibition on the F27 in the Aviodome Museum, the restoration of the PH-FCX 1083 in front of the Aviodome, establishment of a quarterly magazine dedicated to the F27, and, to commemorate the 35th birthday of the F27, a First Flight Memorial on 24 November 1990 and an F27 Fly-in at Lelystad during the Lelystad Airshow on 25 May 1991.

During daylight hours the aircraft can be seen resting at their bases; Auckland, Christchurch, Nelson, and Wellington. One of each type is based at Auckland.
