<...>

A little recorded event at the Moscow airshow at Zhukovsky in August 1995, was the display by a MiG-21UM (‘62 ) of its short-field take-off capability using a ramp. It is understood that the display was for the benefit of potential customers of the MiG-21, as a demonstration of how its take-off performance may be improved. If so, it is not clear how its landing distance would be similarly reduced.

Photographs of military aircraft in service with the Warpac air forces have been easier to obtain since the political changes swept across Europe in 1989. Michel Fournier has provided this photograph of a MiG-21 serving with the Hungarian Air Force.
Further interesting photos from Hungary are provided by Siete Meeter (Friesian Aviation Photo), who visited Budapest's Ferihegy airport on 12 July 1990 and there recorded this MiG-21 in interesting colour scheme.

This MiG-21UM displays the new markings of the Serbian Air Force and Air Defence, applied in the summer of 2007. The insignia on the nose is the unit emblem of the 126th Fighter Squadron, which was integrated with the 127th Fighter Squadron to form 101st Squadron in November 2006.
The only remaining MiG-21 in the SAF&AD, 16180, could potentially still fly in 2021. However, it will probably never take off again because the fatal crash of 16185 extinguished any enthusiasm to extend the career of obsolete Cold War technology
Aircraft number 16174 is one of nine MiG-21UMs that were converted to become non-combat aircraft in 1996
The last Serbian MiG-21 jets are with the 4th Flight, 101st Fighter Aviation Squadron. The unit formed in 2006, having evolved from the 126th Squadron. The demon emblem on the MiG-21UM nose was inherited from the disbanded 126th
Dual-seat MiG-21UMs were used in the fighter squadrons for conversion training from subsonic aircraft; pilots regaining currency after a flying break; as well as for checking flight qualities, weather flights and other auxiliary tasks
Between 2015 and 2020, the QRA occasionally had two dual-seaters - one MiG-21UM and one MiG-29UB. When the MiG-29s became operational again in 2018, the need for air policing with the MiG-21 disappeared

MiG-21UM 16185 (c/n 516999513) was the last MiG-21 produced in the former USSR, at the 31st plant in Tbilisi in December 1986. It was the final MiG-21 to be put into service by the Yugoslav Air Force

Towards the end of their period of service, the squadron of MiG-21s became virtually non-operational with only two actually managing to fly and then only once a week for a short period. This trainer was later broken up.

A MiG-21U alias Type 66 - 600 series, two of which are on the strength of most first-line MiG-21FL squadrons of the IAF for refresher training, checks, etc. It will be noted that the MiG-21U sports an IAF roundel both fore and aft of the wing whereas the single-seat MiG-21FL normally has one fuselage roundel on each side but this can be positioned either forward or aft of the wing.

Still on its own undercarriage but looking somewhat the worse for wear, two-seater BN serial NAF702, delivered in October 1984, sits alongside an NAF MiG-21 at Makurdi three decades later. The BNs did not have the rectangular fin-mounted electronic countermeasures housing fitted to the SNs.

Former Polish Air Force MiG-21UM 51-6905011/VH-XXI, owned by Dick Macintosh, Ross Cooper and Paul Stoddart, undergoes initial engine runs at Bankstown Airport, Sydney, Australia on March 18, 1993. The aircraft will operate from Williamtown RAAF base. Australian CAA rules governing jet warbirds are under review since both occupants of MiG-15UTI VH-LSN died when it crashed at Canberra on March 13 after hitting powerlines ten miles from the airfield.
