The aircraft serves with the 224th Lyotnyi Otriad Voyenno-Transportnoy Aviatsii (224th Aviation Detachment of Military Transport Aviation) based at Tver-Migalovo in the Tver Oblast.

  • Mil Mi-26T Halo RA-06045 (c/n 34001212435, ex 'UNO-657') operated by UTair is seen in partially overpainted United Nations markings at Malta International Airport on August 21, 2012. The helicopter landed at the airport the previous day and stayed for around 24 hours. It has been used on UN charters since at least August 2008, when it was noted at Abeche Airport in Chad. It was the second UTair Mi-26T at Malta in the space of a month, RA-06261 (c/n 34001212097, ex 'UNO-792') - also with overpainted UN markings - having transited through on July 22-23; it was last noted operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo in November 2011.

  • Twelve Lockheed Martin F-16C Fighting Falcons of the 157th Fighter Squadron (FS), 169th Fighter Wing (FW) of the South Carolina Air National Guard (ANG) transited through Moron AB in Spain on August 19, 2012. Known as the 'Swamp Foxes', the unit had completed a four-month tour at Kandahar in Afghanistan and was heading home to McEntire Joint National Guard Base in South Carolina. F-16CM Block 52 93-0549 (seen here, the 'M' indicating it has gone through the Common Cockpit Implementation Program) is seen on approach to the Spanish base. The unit was replaced at Kandahar by the 179th FS, 148th FW of the Minnesota ANG, which transited through Moron on August 11 heading for Afghanistan.

  • Boeing C-135FR Stratotanker 23525/'93-CN' (c/n 18508) of Groupe de Ravitaillement en Vol 02.091 'Bretagne' carries special markings on its tail to commemorate the 70th anniversary of its unit's establishment. It traces its heritage back to the formation of the Groupe Bretagne of the Forces Aeriennes Francaises Libres (Free French Air Force) on January 1, 1942. The Cross of Lorraine at the top of the tanker's fin was the insignia of all the Free French forces in World War Two. The French Stratotanker fleet is based at Istres - Le Tube but has deployments at Manas International Airport in Kyrgyzstan to support Operation Serpentaire over Afghanistan and at N'Djamena International Airport, Chad, for Operation Epervier.

  • Westland Lynx 283 was one of the last three SH-14Ds withdrawn from use on September 11, 2012. All three gained special markings in August to celebrate the type's 36 years in service. The Latin Acta est fabula titles on the tail boom translate as "the play is over". The drawing on the doors includes cartoons of the badges of the ten flight units that operated the Lynx within 860 Squadron.

  • Luftwaffe NHIndustries NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopter 79+01 (c/n 1003/ GEAF01) is assigned to 643 Staffel of Hubschraubergeschwader 64 (HSG 64, Helicopter Wing 64) at Holzdorf. The helicopter is one of six of the enhanced initial operational capability standard due to have the forward air medevac (FAM) kit installed. The wing is soon due to transfer its NH90s to the army's Transporthubschrauberregiment 10 (Transport Helicopter Regiment 10) at Fassberg. In exchange for 32 NH90s, the Luftwaffe will receive the army's Sikorsky CH-53GA fleet. Four NH90s equipped with the FAM kit are due to be deployed to Afghanistan from April 2013, two of which will stand an alert for combat search and rescue (CSAR) missions.

  • Kawasaki P-3C Orions 5073 and 5087 of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force are seen at Andersen AFB on Guam during Exercise Guamex, which was conducted in the waters around the Pacific island in August 2012. They operated alongside US Navy Lockheed-built versions of the maritime patrol aircraft from Patrol Squadron 8 (VP-8) 'Fighting Tigers' home-based at NAS Jacksonville, Florida, but currently deployed to Naval Air Facility Misawa in Aomori Prefecture, Japan.

  • Helder Airport in the Netherlands on July 2, 2012, with the arrival of S-92A OY-HKA (c/n 92-0046). The helicopter, which is the first S-92 based in the Netherlands, was previously operated by CHC Helicopters Denmark from its Esbjerg base. CHC Helicopters Netherlands uses the 19-seat aircraft alongside three 12-seat Eurocopter EC155s and seven AgustaWestland AW139s with 12 to 15 seats.

  • The Heeresfliegerwaffenschule (German Army Aviation Flying School) at Buckeburg has received its first upgraded Sikorsky CH-53GA (84+87, c/n V65-085). The helicopter is equipped with new avionics and autopilot, a satellite communications antenna, forward looking infrared system and defensive counter-measures, and the life of the airframe has been increased. Eurocopter was contracted to upgrade 40 CH-53Gs to the new standard in 2007. The first flew on February 10, 2010. Under current plans the modernised transport helicopters will be based at Laupheim and Holzdorf under Luftwaffe control.

  • Eurocopter delivered the first Puma Mk 2 upgraded as part of the Puma Life Extension Programme back to the Ministry of Defence on September 11, 2012. The helicopter (XW216, seen here flying over Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire) arrived at QinetiQ at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire, to begin trials before handover back to the RAF. The upgrade will extend the life of 24 Pumas until 2025.

  • Airbus A320-214 EI-EPX (msn 1454, ex SP-IAE) heads a line-up of three other former OLT Express Poland Airbuses stored at Dublin Airport in Ireland in August 2012. They are EI-EYH (msn 973, ex SP-IAC), SP-IAA (msn 533, became EI-DDL) and SP-IAB (msn 566, EI-ERV). The airline was formed from Yes Airways, which began service in April 2011 and was rebranded as OLT Express on December 21, 2011, using Warsaw-Okecie as its main hub. The Polish charter carrier ceased operations on July 31 and its nine A320s and two A319 airliners were returned to the lessors. Its demise came soon after sister company OLT Express Regional filed for bankruptcy four days earlier, having had its licence suspended by the Polish aviation authority.

  • Pakistani carrier Airblue has taken delivery of former Aer Lingus Airbus A320-214 EI-CVD (msn 1467) as AP-EDD. The airliner is seen leaving Dublin International Airport on August 10, 2012 on its delivery flight. Airblue is based at Karachi-Jinnah International and operates four A319s; and now two A320s. It is due to receive A340-313X TC-JIK (msn 257) - last flown by Turkish Airlines - on lease from the International Lease Finance Corporation, the first of two for long-haul routes.

The regional jet is seen at Cologne Bonn Airport on August 15, 2012, the day before it was handed over to the African airline. It will join a pair of BAe 146-100s, three ATR 42-500s and a pair of ATR 72-500s in service.

  • The Texel Air Show, held on the island of Texel in the Netherlands on July 28, 2012, attracted a number of military aircraft rarely seen performing at air shows outside their own country. These included Luftforsvaret (Royal Norwegian Air Force) Dassault Falcon 20ECM 041 (c/n 41, named Hugin) from 717 Skvadron/Forsvarets Elektronisk Krigforing Stottesenter (Air Force Electronic Warfare Support Centre) based at Rygge.

  • Noted at Glasgow Airport in Scotland on August 27, 2012 was de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter 200 N181CS (c/n 181) of ARKeX. It arrived at the airport for a stop-over during a ferry flight to Canada, after spending approximately five months based in Turkey. The aircraft carries a full tensor gravity gradiometry system used to help locate oil and gas deposits. ARKeX has its headquarters at Cambridge in the UK, although it also has offices in Houston, Texas.

  • De Havilland Canada EO-5C airborne reconnaissance low-multifunction N53993 (c/n 104) spent the night at Shannon Airport in Ireland on August 12, 2012. The aircraft was parked in a secure area guarded by the Irish Army before departing for the United States the following day. It arrived at Shannon from Wiesbaden in Germany. Of note along with the various hatches under the fuselage is the large blister mounted on the side of the aircraft under the wing and the missile warning systems on the tail.

  • The first two Airbus Military C295Ms for the Indonesian Air Force departed San Pablo Airport, Seville in Spain, on their delivery flights. The aircraft were expected to arrive on September 21, 2012 and be assigned to Skadron Udara 2 to replace Fokker F27-400Ms at Lanuma Halim-Perdanakusuma in Jakarta, Java. The first initially flew as A-9501 (c/n S-090) but has since become A-2901, while the second (seen here) is A-2902 (c/n S-088).

  • Airbus Military A330-203 multi-role tanker transport MRTT005 (EC-336, msn 1183, ex F-WWKN) will become the fifth and final KC-30A (A39-005) delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force. It is seen returning to Getafe in Madrid, Spain, on September 16, 2012 after being painted at Paris-Orly in France. The aircraft first flew as a 'green' airframe on November 20, 2010, and was modified as an MRTT by Qantas Defence Services Ltd of Brisbane, Queensland.

  • The second of three Airbus Military A330-243 Multi-Role Tanker Transports (MRTT) (MRTT014/EC-334, msn 1186, ex F-WWYL) for the United Arab Emirates Air Force (UAEAF) arrived at Getafe in Spain from Toulouse in France on the afternoon of August 16, 2012 after being painted. One of the aircraft for the UAEAF lost its Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS) on September 10 at 27,000ft (8.230m) over Ceres in Spain. No one was injured in the incident and the aircraft landed safely at Getafe. A KC-30A for the RAAF suffered a similar incident in January 2011 while refuelling a Portuguese F-16. The UAE was due to take delivery of the tanker transports shortly, although handover of the first will be delayed until repairs are completed.

  • German army aviation's Heeresfliegerunterstutzungsstaffel 1 (HFIgUstgStff 1, Army Aviation Support Squadron 1) based at Holzdorf will disband in 2013. To mark the occasion the unit has painted MBB Bo 105P1M 86+28 (c/n 6028) in this special scheme. The stork forms part of the unit's crest. HFIgUstgStff 1 stood up at Holzdorf on January 1, 2003, equipped with 14 Bo 105s.

  • Danish helicopter company Bel Air commenced offshore operations from Den Helder Airport in the Netherlands on behalf of DanCopter on August 1, 2012 for a period of two months. For this purpose, Bel Air uses its most recently delivered AgustaWestland AW139 (OY-HML, c/n 31411), seen here landing at Den Helder on the second day of operations. Established in 1994, Bel Air is based at Hoisted Heliport in Denmark and commenced offshore operations in 2009. It currently operates two AW139s and has two larger AW189s on order.

  • Cessna 208B Caravan IC-GZTB (c/n 208B-2305) owned by Geotech Aviation is equipped for airborne surveys. The aircraft is seen at Palma de Mallorca on August 31, 2012 after a non-stop 12 hours 39 minute flight from St John's International Airport, Newfoundland in Canada. The aircraft originally departed Toronto Pearson International, Ontario, on August 27. It arrived at Perth Airport in Western Australia on September 9, after flying from Jakarta in Indonesia in just under ten hours. It is believed that the aircraft will undertake survey flights in Australia.

  • Cessna 208 Caravan 12-01276 is the latest to join the US Army's fleet of nonstandard special operations aircraft. The aircraft arrived at RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, from Wick in Scotland on August 27, 2012, and is seen departing for Stuttgart in Germany two days later. The aircraft's operating unit is unknown, although it may be associated with the 427th Special Operations Squadron (SOS) based at Pope Army Air Field, North Carolina, assigned to Air Force Special Operations Command. The 427th SOS is believed to already operate a pair of Cessna 208B Grand Caravans acquired in 2005.

  • Between September 3 and 7, 2012, AgustaWestland AW159 Lynx Wildcat AH1 ZZ406 (c/n 476) participated in forward arming and refuelling point (FARP) drills on the Salisbury Plain Training Area in Wiltshire. It was the first time the type has operated over the area, the exercise taking place at the Carter FARP with assistance from 6th Regiment Army Air Corps (Volunteers). Wildcat ZZ406 was delivered to RNAS Yeovilton, Somerset, on May 29.

  • Fairchild C-26E Metroliner 91-00505 (c/n DC804M, ex N3007H) of the Army National Guard (ARNG) was noted arriving at Glasgow Airport in Scotland on September 9, 2012 for a two-day stopover. The aircraft was heading back to Rickenbacker International Airport, Ohio, after a tour in Afghanistan. It was last noted in service with the North Carolina State Flight Detachment (SFD)/Operational Support Airlift Command (OSACOM) Det 17 based at Morrisville Army Aviation Support Facility, North Carolina, but Rickenbacker is home to Ohio SFD/OSACOM Det 21, to which the aircraft may have been transferred. The pod under the fuselage is believed to contain a surveillance system. The C-26E is an upgraded version of the C-26B, featuring a Rockwell Collins 'glass cockpit' with a global air traffic management system to allow it to comply with the latest international air navigation requirements.

  • Two PZL-Mielec M28-05 Skytrucks of the 318th Special Operations Squadron, 27th Special Operations Wing, passed through RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, on August 25, 2012. The aircraft (10-0322, c/n AJE00332, ex N332PD; and 11-0329, c/n AJE00329, ex N329JD) are home-based at Cannon AFB, New Mexico. They used the call-signs Reach 1047 and Reach 1045 although they are Air Force Special Operations Command aircraft and Reach is usually assigned to Air Mobility Command flights. The Skytrucks transport cargo and small special operations teams into areas that cannot accommodate larger MC-130 Hercules variants and were most likely heading for Afghanistan.

  • Sicilian low-cost carrier Wind Jet flew its last service on August 11, 2012 and suspended operations the following day. It had signed a memorandum of understanding with Alitalia in January to explore a possible merger, but negotiations broke down. Wind Jet cancelled a number of flights and delayed others, resulting in the Enta Nazionale Aviaziona Civile (Italian civil aviation authority) threatening to revoke its air operator's certificate if it did not produce a plan to ensure a return to full operations and clear outstanding debts. The majority of its 11 Airbus A319/320s have already been returned to lessors.   • Finnair Airbus A319-112 OH-LVD (msn 1352, ex D-AVYW) was painted in oneworld alliance colours in August 2012. The airliner is seen at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands on September 3. The Finnish flag carrier joined the alliance in 1999.

  • Airbus A321-212 EC-JRE (msn 2756, ex D-AVZA) Villa de Uncastillo of Iberia carries the crest of the Basketball Federation of Spain on its front fuselage with the titles 'Gracias por hacernos sonar' (thanks for making us dream). Spain was narrowly defeated by the United States in the final of the men's basketball on August 12, 2012 during the London Olympics. The airliner is seen departing London Heathrow on August 18.

  • Boeing 737-46Q Special Freighter VP-BCJ (c/n 28663, ex N682AG) is the first for ATRAN-Aviatrans Cargo Airlines of Moscow-Domodedovo Airport. It was delivered on July 23, 2012 after being converted from passenger configuration and is seen at Cologne Bonn Airport on August 11. It will be operated on behalf of UPS, flying between Cologne and Moscow.

  • Noted conducting a missed approach and touch-and-go at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Washington, on September 7, 2012 was Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) 737-7ZH N930BH (c/n 38751) of Nanshan Jet of Yantai, China. The aircraft was operating from Paine Field/Snohomish County Airport, Washington. It first flew on September 23, 2011 and was officially handed over by Boeing in December.

  • ATR 72-212A F-WNUB (msn 578, ex EC-HBY) is destined to be delivered to Buddha Air of Nepal. The turboprop was operated by Air Nostrum from April 1999, before being returned to ATR in August. It is seen at Toulouse in southern France on September 5, 2012, and will become 9N-AJX upon delivery. Buddha Air currently operates two other ATR 72-212As, three ATR 42-320s and three Beech 1900Ds from its main hub at Kathmandu-Tribhuvan International Airport.

  • A ceremony was held at RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire, on September 6, 2012 to mark the 10,000th operational flight hour of the Beechcraft Shadow R1 in RAF service. The commanding officer of No. 14 Squadron, Wing Commander Rich Moir, speaking at the event, said: "Since it was first introduced into service [from May 2009] it has had an outstanding serviceability rate and delivered consistently in the skies over Afghanistan." The unit is equipped with five Shadow R1s which undertake intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance in support of Operation Herrick.
