Dassault Rafale
Фирма "Dassault" в начале 1980-х годов (до выхода Франции в августе 1985 года из многонационального проекта европейского истребителя EFA) разработала экспериментальный боевой самолет ACX (Avion de Combat Experimentale) в рамках национальной программы. Франция вышла из проекта EFA из-за того, что французские ВС, особенно ВМФ, хотели получить более компактную и легкую машину массой около 8000 кг. Демонстрационный прототип ACX массой 9500 кг в то время еще доводился. Впервые он взлетел 4 июля 1986 года и помог проверить базовую аэродинамическую схему, конфигурацию, характеристики, систему дистанционного управления и конструкцию с широким применением композитов для проекта ACT (Avion de Combat Tactique).
ACX, позже переименованный в Rafale A, первоначально оснащался двумя ТРДДФ General Electric F404-GE-400 тягой 68,60 кН. После 460 испытательных полетов, включавших посадки на палубу авианосца "Клемансо" с касанием и уходом на второй круг, левый двигатель заменили на SNECMA M88-2 тягой 73,5 кН, разработанный для Rafale.
Одноместный прототип Rafale C впервые взлетел 19 мая 1991 года, совершив крейсерский полет со сверхзвуковой скоростью на бесфорсажной тяге. Он стал единственным прототипом одноместного самолета для ВВС.

Серийные самолеты Rafale начали поступать в строй в 2004 году, тогда же ВВС Франции получили свой первый самолет Standard F2. Они заменяют устаревшие машины Crusader, Super Etendard, Jaguar, Mirage F1, Mirage 2000C/D/N и Mirage IV. При сохранении основных особенностей проекта ACX универсальный самолет Rafale D стал чуть компактнее и легче. Для уменьшения радиолокационной и визуальной заметности он получил более округлые обтекатели корневой части крыла, фонарь кабины с внутренним золотым напылением, темно-серую радиопоглощающую окраску и новый профиль сочленения хвостовой части фюзеляжа с оперением. Киль стал ниже и увенчался обтекаемым контейнером системы РЭБ Spectra и инфракрасного детектора пуска ракет. Обтекатели в районе крепления ПГО немного продлены вперед для установки антенн Spectra. Переднее горизонтальное оперение (при выпуске шасси отклоняется на 20° вверх для обеспечения дополнительной подъемной силы при посадке) стало больше, чем в проекте ACX, и изготовлено из сверхпластичного формованного титана вместо углепластика.
Композитные материалы составляют более 50% массы планера Rafale. Пять узлов подвески предназначены для ПТБ, ракет MICA класса "воздух-воздух", AS30L класса "воздух-поверхность" с лазерным наведением, ПКР AM39 Exocet и блока средств пассивной самозащиты Scalp. На самолете установлена первая в Западной Европе РЛС RBE2 с ФАР с электронным сканированием по углу места и азимуту. Оборудование кабины - широкоугольный индикатор на фоне лобового стекла Sextant, дисплей оценки тактической обстановки, расположенный на уровне головы пилота и два многофункциональных дисплея, расположенных чуть ниже, на приборной панели, а также нашлемный прицел. Органы управления самолетом созданы с использованием принципа HOTAS.
Rafale D стал основой для серийных одноместных Rafale C и двухместных Rafale B для ВВС Франции. Из-за урезания финансирования ВВС Франции получит 234 самолета Rafale вместо 250 первоначально заказанных, ВМФ получит 60 из 86 заказанных машин. В 1999 году наряду с 23 машинами для ВВС заказали 25 самолетов флотского варианта Rafale M. В 2002 и 2004 годах подписали еще два контракта на 59 самолетов каждый. Поставки по последнему контракту осуществляются в 2008-2011 годах.

В конце 2009 года Франция решила заказать еще 60 самолетов Rafale Standard F3 (51 для ВВС, остальные для ВМФ), оборудованные РЛС AESA и улучшенными системами самозащиты. В начале 2010 года Rafale участвовал в конкурсах на поставки истребителей в Бразилию, Индию и Швейцарию. Интерес к машине также проявляли на Ближнем Востоке и в Ливии.

It is one of two Rafales (the other being 121/'113-IZ') painted in this special colour scheme to celebrate 30,000 operational flying hours accumulated by the air force's Rafale units. The illustration of 'The Little Prince' on the aircraft tails refers to the name of Base Aerienne 113, 'Commandant Antoine de Saint-Exupery', the famous French pilot and writer who created the character.

The fifth Indo-French air exercise Garuda V was held at Air Force Station Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India. Four Dassault Rafale C/Bs from the Armee de fair's (French Air Force) Escadron de Chasse 3/30 ‘Lorraine’ were deployed to Jodhpur, supported by a single Boeing C-135FR Stratotanker from Groupe de Ravitaillement en Vol 2/91 ‘Bretagne’. Indian aircraft included Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21bisUPG Bisons, Mikoyan MiG-27UPGs and Sukhoi Su-30MKIs, as well as Ilyushin Il-78MKI tankers and an A-50Ehl airborne early warning and control aircraft. The object of the Garuda exercises is to enhance interoperability and co-operation between the two air forces. Crews fly combat training missions covering a range of realistic scenarios. Attending the 100th anniversary celebrations of No.3(F) Squadron at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, on May 12, 2012, was Dassault Rafale C 104/'113-HH' of Escadron de Chasse 1/7 'Provence' based at BA113 Saint-Dizier-Robinson. The aircraft was decorated with a somewhat weathered specially painted fin. On March 30 EC 1/7 assumed the heritage of SPA 162 'Tigres' from EC 1/12 'Cambresis'. EC 1/12 was one of the original members of the NATO Tiger Club thanks to having SPA162 as a flight within its structure. It last flew Mirage 2000C-RDIs, accounting for the small silhouette of the type in front of the SPA162 badge on the fin.

Based at BA118 Mont-de-Marsan, the squadron is one of the most prestigious in the Armee de I’Air with more aerial victories than any other unit. The squadron has painted Rafale C coded ‘30-HR’ in a striking colour scheme commemorating the squadron’s service in Russia during World War Two.
