The new state-of-the-art academy will use 'live' aircraft for training and seen here close to the airfield on its arrival on October 29 last year is refurbished former Iberia Boeing 727-256 (c/n 21779), which has since been joined by ex-QinetiQ HS748 XW750. Marshall is considering extending its European Aviation Safety Agency EASA 147 maintenance training approval to the new academy and also thinking about commencing MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) operations at the airport, using the remaining available capacity in the newly refurbished hangars. A decision is anticipated by the summer.

THIS BOEING 727-281, registered HL7350 (c/n 20469), currently residing at Inha University in Incheon, South Korea, made its maiden flight on December 29, 1970, before being delivered to lapan's All Nippon Airlines (ANA) as JA8831. After a decade of ANA service, it was sold to Korean Air in December 1980, giving another ten years of service before suffering a wheels-up landing at Taegu (now Daegu) in South Korea on June 13, 1991. The accident report stated that the crew failed to read out the landing checklist, did not extend the undercarriage, then pulled the circuit-breaker when the warning horn sounded. Fortunately for the 127 aboard, there were no casualties.

Pictured is one of two Boeing 727-200s, used by Africa's first low-cost airline, Kulula.com Kulula, meaning 'easy' in Zulu, is a subsidiary of South African carrier Comair which is a British Airways franchise operator. The new venture was launched in August 2001 and was profitable within six months. It flies Johannesburg to Cape Town and Durban.

Boeing 727-17(RE) Super 27 VP-BPZ (c/n 20327, ex N727PN) was noted at Stansted Airport, Essex, on July 26, 2012. The former airliner is operated on behalf of Peter J Nygard, a Canadian fashion executive and Chairman of Nygard International, a company based in Winnipeg. The aircraft originally served with CP Air from delivery in March 1970 and briefly flew with Nigeria Air in 1977 before becoming a corporate aircraft, operated successively by the Fluor Corporation, the Amway Corporation and Enterprise Aviation. It was purchased by its current owner in May 2005.

All of Boeing’s 727s were built at Renton, Washington, ‘‘Super 200” PP-SNG (c/n 21345) making its first flight on October 7, 1980. It was delivered to VASP nine days later to become one of 13 used by the airline on its medium-haul routes, and particularly its Economy Night Flights, during 1977-2005.

Following its moment of fame in 1982, PP-SNG continued to serve with VASP, but was leased out to American operators Capitol Air and Arrow Air during 1984-86 before being sold to a new owner in the USA as N327AS. After serving with Alaska Airlines and Sun Country Airlines, it was sold again in 1994 to become N287SC.

VASP’s Flight 169 cost 135 Cruzeiros in 1982, with a scheduled departure from Fortaleza at 0145hr. The service operated seven days a week between Fortaleza and Sao Paulo, with stops at Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Cuiaba, Curitiba, Goiania and Rio de Janeiro. Stops at Altamira, Campinas, Campo Grande, Porto Velho, Rio Branco and Santarem were also made on selected days.

This Boeing 727 is pictured at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in May this year and was being used by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This agency is JPATS' largest customer, though as illustrated here, it also operates its own aircraft to give it more flexibility in scheduling flights and accommodate the growing number of deportees.

One of 15 Wing’s C-130H Hercules formates behind and below one of the two elderly Boeing 727-29QCs also operated by the Wing. Both the 727s are expected to be replaced shortly, probably with newer 727s. Of the 12 Hercules delivered, 11 remain in service, one having been destroyed in a tragic fatal accident in Holland on July 15,1996. Heavy utilisation of the Herk fleet means that an attrition replacement for this aircraft is now being urgently sought.

Fuerza Aerea Mexicana (FAM, Mexican Air Force) Boeing 727-264 FAM-3505 (c/n 22661, ex XA-MXA) is seen on approach to Toronto Lester B Pearson International Airport, Ontario in Canada, on May 18, 2012. Operated by Escuadron Aereo 502, Grupo Aereo No 3, from General Alfredo Lezama Alavrez Air Base, Santa Lucia, the aircraft was in Canada transporting a group of military personnel to various installations, having also visited several sites in the United States. It flew with Mexicana as Acapulco before being acquired by the FAM in October 2002, one of ten Boeing 727s that have been used by the Mexican Government and military over the years.

Boeing 727-282 Adv (RE) XT-BFA (c/n 22430, ex N727RE) operated by the Burkina Faso government, was used to transport VIPs to Brussels Airport in Belgium on May 15, 2013 to attend the international donor conference to raise funds for Mali. Three African government Boeing 727s arrived at Brussels on the same day, with XT-BFA joined by -2Y4 Adv (RE) TU-VAO (c/n 22968, ex VP-CML) of Cote d'Ivoire and Mali's -2K5 Adv TZ-001 (c/n 21853, ex LX-MMM).

Although it was highly successful with the world's airlines, the Boeing 727 trijet did not do well in the government VVIP market. Originally owned and operated by Pacific Southwest Airlines, this 727-14 (XT-BBE, c/n 21091) was acquired by the Government of Burkina Fasso in July 1988.

Surrounding the government Boeing 727-2K5 (TZ-001, c/n 21853, ex TZ-MBA) are a number of stored or withdrawn aircraft, including Britten-Norman BN2A-21 Islander TZ-389 (c/n 2182, ex TZ-APV), Cessna O-2A Skymaster TZ-387 (right) and TZ-388 (left), Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17F TZ-346, plus several MiG-21s (including -21bis TZ-371). Just visible in the hangar, under the rear of the 727, is a single-engined Cessna, while the blue top of a Thrush agricultural aircraft can be seen among the group of MiG-21s.

Boeing 727-256Adv TY-24A (c/n 20819) of the Benin Government is seen at the capital's Cotonou Airport. The aircraft has been in service with the Republique du Benin since around 2006 and was previously flown by Iberia as EC-CFI.

Arriving at Southend Airport, Essex, for maintenance with ATC Lasham on December 15, 2010, was Boeing 727-30 9Q-CDC (c/n 18934) of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The VIP airliner arrived from Tamanrassat in Algeria devoid of the titles identifying its operator that it usually carries. Built in 1966, the aircraft originally served with Lufthansa as D-ABIS and has flown in the Congo since 1986.

This Boeing 727-100C (N946UP) is one of five convertible -25Cs operated by Eastern in the late 1960s and early 1970s on passenger services during the day and cargo service at night. Thirty years later, it is once again splitting its time between passenger and cargo service. United Parcel Service chose the 727-100 for passenger charter as it has the lowest utilisation rate in its fleet. Five 727s were modified to accept the interior quick-change system and like all of its other 727-100s, the aircraft has been re-engined with Rolls-Royce Tay 651 turbofans and fitted with an electronic flight information system flight deck.

A hush kit programme was introduced by FedEx for its Boeing 727s to extend the useful life of the aircraft and enabled the type to meet FAA noise requirements. However, the company has announced that it intends to replace the type with Boeing 757-200s.

Boeing 727-2M7F (Adv) PR-MTJ (c/n 21952, ex N742RW) was noted at Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport, Santiago in Chile on July 28, 2011 undergoing engine tests. The freighter has spent around two years outside the Airman Aircraft Maintenance facility at the airport, devoid of its former TAF Linhas Aereas titles. It is not known if the aircraft will return to TAF service or is being prepared for a new operator.

Boeing 727-2S2AF Super 27 G-OSRA (c/n 22938, ex N217FE) was rolled out on September 11, 2013 after repainting by Air Livery at Manchester Airport. The former FedEx Express freighter arrived there from Lasham in Hampshire, on September 2, after flying from Lasham in Hampshire. It was acquired by T2 Aviation and will be equipped as an oil dispersal spraying aircraft. It has the distinction of being the final 727 built.

T2 Aviation's second Boeing 727-2SRF (G-OSRB, c/n 22929, ex N207FE and N480EC) leaving Manchester International Airport on February 4, 2015 bound for Doncaster-Robin Hood Airport in Yorkshire. The aircraft was painted by Air Livery into the house colours of Oil Spill Response, for which T2 will operate the aircraft alongside 727 G-OSRA.
