Boeing Helicopters Model 114, 234 и 414 (H-47 Chinook)

В марте 1959 года командование Армии США, рассмотрев предложения от пяти американских вертолетостроительных компаний, выбрало Boeing Vertol Model 114 в качестве наиболее подходящего под требования к перспективному армейскому транспортному вертолету. Вертолет должен быть всепогодным, иметь задний грузовой люк, поднимать до 1814 кг груза в кабине или до 7258 кг на внешней подвеске, брать на борт не менее 40 десантников в полной экипировке и с оружием, иметь возможность перевозить любой из элементов ракетной системы Martin Marietta Pershing, а также быть приспособленным для эвакуации раненых.
   В июне 1959 года был выдан контракт на сборку пяти предсерийных YHC-1B, которые после поступления в войска переименовали в YCH-47A Chinook.
   Model 114 представлял собой фактически увеличенный и более мощный вариант спроектированного этой же компанией вертолета Model 107, отличаясь четырехопорным вместо трехопорного шасси, полностью герметичной по всей длине нижней частью фюзеляжа и наличием наплывов по обоим бортам - за счет этого удалось обеспечить плавучесть машины и возможность посадки и взлета с водной поверхности.
   Первый YHC-1B поднялся в воздух 21 сентября 1961 года, к тому времени компания-разработчик уже получила первый контракт на поставку партии серийных CH-47A.
   В качестве силовой установки были выбраны два двигателя Lycoming T55-L-5 мощностью по 2200 л. с, позже замененных на модель T55-L-7 мощностью 2650 л. с. Поставка CH-47A начата в августе 1962 года, всего были заказаны 354 вертолета.

   К настоящему времени на основе базовой модели разработано и построено целое семейство вертолетов Chinook. Первым из них стал CH-47B, отличавшийся двумя двигателями T55-L-7C мощностью 2850 л. с, несущими винтами с лопастями с увеличенной хордой и усовершенствованным профилем, а также имевший ряд других усовершенствований. Первый из двух прототипов поднялся в воздух в октябре 1966 года, а поставки начаты 10 мая 1967 года. Всего поставлены 108 вертолетов данной модификации.
   Следующим представителем семейства стал CH-47C (экспортное обозначение Model 234 или Model 414), имевший двигатели T55-L-11A мощностью 3750 л. с, усиленную трансмиссию и увеличенный запас топлива. Первая машина поднялась в воздух 14 октября 1967 года, поставки заказчику начаты в начале 1968 года. Поставлены 270 таких вертолетов, из которых 182 позже были модернизированы за счет установки более стойкой к повреждениям топливной системы и композитными лопастями несущих винтов. Девять подобных машин были построены по заказу ВС Канады и получили обозначение CH-147 (поставки начаты в сентябре 1974 года).
   Во время вьетнамской войны были выпущены четыре ACH-47A, представлявшие собой CH-47A с бронированием кабины экипажа и жизненно важных частей вертолета, а также комплексом вооружения из 40-мм автоматического гранатомета М5, установленного в носовой части на вращающейся турели, и размещенных на пилонах 20-мм пушки и 7,62-мм пулемета или блока на 19 неуправляемых ракет. Кроме того, в кабине - по бортам и в задней части - располагались пять турелей с 7,62-мм или 12,7-мм пулеметами. Три таких вертолета активно использовались в интересах сил спецопераций во Вьетнаме, но дальнейшего развития программа не получила.
   Вертолеты семейства Chinook до сих пор являются основными в американской Армии, причем имевшиеся на вооружении вертолеты модификаций CH-47A, CH-47B и CH-47C неоднократно проходили модернизацию. В частности, в рамках одной из программ, разработанной для увеличения ресурса и грузоподъемности этих вертолетов, по одной из машин всех трех модификаций были подвергнуты капитальному ремонту и модернизации - они стали прототипами новой модификации CH-47D. Первый из трех опытных прототипов поднялся в воздух 11 мая 1979 года, а первый серийный CH-47D - 26 февраля 1982 года. Новая модель оснащалась более мощными двигателями T55-L-712 мощностью 4500 л. с, были внедрены еще более десятка усовершенствований - усилена трансмиссия, установлены новые несущие винты и вспомогательная силовая установка, усовершенствованы электронное и гидравлическое оборудование и системы заправки топливом в полете, а также усилена конструкция планера. Компания "Boeing" получила контракт стоимостью более 3,5 млрд долларов на модернизацию 472 ранее построенных вертолетов, первый модернизированный вертолет поставлен заказчику в мае 1982 года.
   Британские ВВС заказали 33 вертолета под обозначением Chinook HC.Mk 1, строившихся по стандарту канадских CH-147, но получивших британские авионику и другое оборудование. Позже их модернизировали до стандарта Chinook HC.Mk 1В. Первый вертолет передан заказчику в августе 1980 года, а затем их парк в Великобритании был доведен до 41 машины. Следующим шагом стала модернизация британских вертолетов до стандарта Chinook HC.Mk 1 А, а 32 машины позднее модернизировали в вариант Chinook HC.Mk 2 (аналог американского CH-47D), в том числе путем установки двигателей T55-L-712F. Дополнительно британские военные заказали 17 вертолетов: два Chinook HC.Mk 2, четыре Chinook HC.Mk 2А, остальные в модификации Chinook HC.Mk 3, схожей с используемым Силами специальных операций ВС США вертолетом MH-47E. Впрочем, машины последней модификации в эксплуатацию сразу не попали - ввиду возникших проблем с авионикой их поместили на складское хранение, но в 2008 году приступили к переоборудованию в вариант HC.Mk 2/2А (поставка первых запланирована на 2010 год).
   В 1970-х годах начата лицензионная постройка вертолетов Chinook в Италии - они поставлялись европейским и ближневосточным заказчикам, права на их выпуск приобрела компания "Elicotteri Meridionali". В июле 2008 года лицензия перешла к компании "AgustaWestland" - для итальянской армии она должна собирать модернизированные CH-47F.
   Экспортный вариант вертолета выпускался компанией "Boeing Vertol" (затем "Boeing Helicopters", позже - просто "Boeing") под обозначением CH-47D International Chinook (Model 414-100), а в последнее время компания сосредоточилась на выпуске вертолетов модификации CH-47F.
   Кроме Канады и Великобритании, вертолеты данного семейства приобрели в разное время Аргентина, Австралия, Египет, Греция, Иран, Италия (CH-47C Plus), Япония (CH-47J, лицензионная сборка компанией "Kawasaki"), Ливия, Марокко, Нидерланды, Сингапур, Южная Корея, Испания, Тайвань и Таиланд.
   Летом 1978 года компания "Boeing" объявила о разработке гражданского варианта Chinook, планировались две базовые модификации: Model 234LR (Long Range) в пассажирском, "комби", или грузовом вариантах, а также Model 234UT (Utility Transport) для решения специальных задач, таких как разведка полезных ископаемых, перевозка негабаритных грузов или выполнение строительно-монтажных работ. Позже был выпущен вертолет Model 234ER (Extended Range) с дополнительными топливными баками, установленными в кабине.
   Программа Model 234LR была начата в ноябре 1978 года после подписания контракта с "British Airways Helicopters" на три машины (позже заказ увеличен до шести), которые предполагалось задействовать для перевозки пассажиров и срочных грузов из Шотландии на морские нефтедобывающие платформы. В пассажирском варианте такой вертолет мог брать до 44 человек.
   На гражданских машинах устанавливались двигатели Avco Lycoming AL 5512, причем в чрезвычайной ситуации оба несущих винта могли работать от одного двигателя. В наплывах фюзеляжа были установлены дополнительные топливные баки большой емкости. Эти же наплывы обеспечивали вертолету достаточно хорошую плавучесть.
   Первый Model 234LR поднялся в воздух 19 августа 1980 года, в программе испытаний были задействованы также еще два вертолета, а в эксплуатацию первая машина поступила 1 июля 1981 года.
   Вертолеты семейства Chinook часто переоборудовались для решения различных задач в интересах сил спецопераций. Так, в начале 1990-х годов "Boeing" выпустила 26 оснащенных двигателями T55-L-714 вертолетов MH-47E для спецназа Армии США, где они работали в тесном взаимодействии с переоборудованными серийными машинами CH-47D SOA (Special Operations Aircraft) и MH-47D SOA. Вертолеты имели бронирование, наступательное и оборонительное вооружение, дополнительный запас топлива и систему дозаправки топливом в полете. Машины также получили новейшую авионику, системы РЭБ и всепогодные навигационные системы (в том числе очки ночного видения, ИК-камеру переднего обзора, инерциальную навигационную систему с приемником сигналов GPS и РЛС APQ-174).
   С конца 1990-х годов "Boeing" вела работы по оснащению вертолета CH-47F двигателями мощностью 5000 л. с, новыми несущими винтами, топливными баками повышенной емкости и новой авионикой. Первый полет новая машина совершила 25 июня 2001 года, она имела двигатели Honeywell T55-714A - на 25% большей мощности по сравнению с двигателями вертолета CH-47D. Предполагается, что Армия США закупит 513 машин новой модификации - из них 452 будут новыми, а остальные модернизированы из имеющихся на вооружении. Последние получили обозначение MH-47G.
   Первое подразделение было полностью перевооружено на модификацию CH-47F в июле 2007 года, а к середине следующего года компания-разработчик получила заказы от Австралии, Канады и Нидерландов. Интерес к данному вертолету проявили Турция и Индия.
   "Boeing" также разработала модернизированный вариант HH-47 в ответ на требования, выпущенные ВВС США к новому вертолету для замены парка MH-53M Pave Low (программа CSAR-X). Предложение было направлено командованию ВВС в ноябре 2005 года, а в ноябре 2006 года "Boeing" была объявлена победителем в тендере на перспективный вертолет. Соперниками "Boeing" выступали вариант на базе S-92 компании "US101" и вертолет разработки "Lockheed Martin". Эти компании подали протест, не согласившись с результатами тендера, - в итоге в ноябре 2007 года ВВС США были вынуждены вновь объявлять свои требования к перспективной машине и по состоянию на август 2009 года решение по выбору того или иного вертолета объявлено не было.
   В августе 2007 года представители "Boeing" объявили о наличии планов по созданию увеличенной версии CH-47F, которая будет отличаться увеличенной дальностью полета и грузоподъемностью. Запуск данной программы может быть осуществлен уже в 2010 году.

The aircraft will be delivered to the Army for operational testing before being deployed in 2007. An $163 million contract was awarded to Boeing on November 1 for new build production CH-47F helicopters for the US Army, with contract completion expected by December 29, 2009. The number of helicopters involved was not specified. The US Army plans to procure a total of 510 CH-47F/MH-47G helicopters, comprising 55 new production CH-47Fs, 397 CH-47Ds remanufactured to CH-47F standard and 58 MH-47Gs.

The aircraft is shown at Odiham on November 5, 2015, the squadron’s 100th birthday, when it was unveiled to the press. The tail markings feature an elephant motif painted in the squadron's official colours to represent the Martinsyde Elephant (the unit's first aircraft) and its motto ‘Quam celerrime ad astra' meaning ‘With all speed to the stars’. Other more discrete markings were applied in tribute to Flight Lieutenant Geraint Roberts, a former squadron member and of No.230 Squadron based RAF Benson who, along with a colleague from No.33 Squadron, died when their Puma helicopter recently crashed in Kabul, Afghanistan.

RAF Odiham in Hampshire received the first of eight upgraded Chinook HC5 helicopters from Vector Aerospace at Fleetlands, Hampshire on March 22, 2017. The Chinook HC5 is a Chinook HC3 upgraded with a digital cockpit, and a new digital automatic flight control system, which provides improved handling qualities and aircraft stability that in turn enhances flight safety. A Chinook HC5 can be distinguished from the HC4 and HC6 variants already in RAF service by its fatter fuel tanks.

Boeing announced on April 15, 2013 that the first Chinook Mk 6 for the RAF had flown. The helicopter (N701UK, c/n M7701) was built at the company's Ridley Township facility near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and has undergone test flying at Mesa in Arizona with first flight on March 15. The RAF has 14 Chinook Mk 6s on order, a version of the CH-47F with British-specified equipment. The first is due to be delivered later this year.

An RAF Chinook HC.2 of 27 Squadron lands high in the mountains of Afghanistan during operations to support Operation Ptarmigan, the Royal Marines/45 Commando Group operation which commenced on April 16, 2002 to search and clear a high Afghan valley believed to have been occupied by al-Qaeda and Taliban forces. Note that the helicopter has a full ‘war’ fit of defensive aids, including ALQ-157 IR jammers, Sky Guardian 19 radar warning receivers, AN/ALE-40 chaff/flare dispensers and ALQ-156/AAR-47 missile approach warning system, plus a pintle-mounted M134 minigun in the forward starboard door. The operation concluded on April 18, with troops returning to Bagram. The Chinooks were again in use during 45 Commando’s Operation Snipe, which began on May 2 in an area of southeastern Afghanistan not previously investigated by coalition forces. This resulted in a huge arms cache being discovered in a large cave complex, which was subsequently destroyed with demolition charges.

The UK Joint Helicopter Command's Exercise Pashtun Jaguar 2-11 concluded on August 21, 2011. The mission rehearsal exercise prepares aircrews for operations in Afghanistan. Pashtun Jaguar 2-11 began on July 24 and most of the flying took place over Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire. In addition to Army Air Corps Apache AH1s and Lynx, and RAF Chinooks and Merlin HC3/3As, Royal Navy Sea King HC4s from the service's commando support squadrons took part in the early stages, before they were replaced by RAF Puma HC1s. In the final week the Pumas gave way to two Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Royal Netherlands Air Force) CH-47D Chinooks (D-103 and D-663) from No.298 Squadron based at Gilze-Rijen (seen here).

The Rotary Wing Group of the Australian Defence Force recently recommenced full operational duties from Kandahar in Afghanistan. At least two Australian Army Air Corps Boeing CH-47D Chinooks from the 5th Aviation Regiment (including A15-104 seen here) based at Townsville, Queensland, have been embedded within the US Army's 159th Combat Aviation Brigade. The helicopters returned to Afghanistan after maintenance following the conclusion of the last deployment in October 2010. The Chinooks completed over 737 flight hours in theatre during the last rotation, carrying approximately 691,000kg (1.52 million lb) of supplies.

Australian Army CH-47D A15-106 from C Squadron of the 5th Aviation Regiment at Townsville, Queensland, is unloaded from a C-17A at Kandahar, Afghanistan, on February 8, 2008. The helicopter is one of two redeployed to the country for a second tour of duty as part of Operation Slipper, the Australian contribution to coalition operations in Afghanistan. Since their previous deployment, which ended in April 2007, the Chinooks have undergone engine upgrades and deep maintenance. They have also been equipped with an enhanced level of ballistic protection, together with advanced communications equipment.

The Royal Canadian Air Force's tenth Boeing CH-147F Chinook (147310, c/n M3060) was delivered on March 13, 2014. The callsign CANFORCE 147 was used during the ferry flight. It flew from the factory at Boeing Helicopters Center 3 South Heliport in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, to Toronto Lester B Pearson International Airport in Ontario, where it cleared customs and took on additional fuel. The helicopter then proceeded to its base at Garrison Petawawa, Ontario. The Canadian Government ordered 15 CH-147Fs in a CDN5 billion deal in 2009. The first was officially delivered in June 2013 and on average one aircraft has been handed over per month since. All of the CH-147Fs will be assigned to 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron at Garrison Petawawa.

The first example of the ICH-47F Chinook was exhibited in late May, 2013 at the AgustaWestland plant in Vergiate, where the Italian production line is located. CSX81778 (c/n M7801) is the first of 16 ordered by the Italian Army, which also has options for a further four. The CH-47F variant is being produced under a joint production contract signed by Boeing and AgustaWestland on July 16, 2008. It differs from the Boeing-built CH-47F by having new communications, navigation and mission systems provided by Selex, including an integrated threat alert system, ballistic protection, passive countermeasures launcher and crashworthy seats for the crew. The Italian order was announced on May 13, 2009, for delivery between 2013 and 2017 and the first is due to fly later this year.

The latest Aerial Firefighting North America conference at McClellan Field in Sacramento, California, saw the Coulson-Unical Air joint venture debut its CH-47 Chinook N40CU. It is the only heavy helicopter delivery system that can carry an internal 3,000 US gal (11,336 litres) load for firefighting. Modified from CH-47D 89-0169, the aircraft features a RADS-L touchscreen tank control system with onboard diagnostics, a GPS speed and radar altimeter and night-vision goggle-compatible synthetic vision technology. A retractable snorkel also increases safety and ease of ground operations.

Technicians position a US Army Special Forces MH-47 Chinook in the Benefield Anechoic Facility at Edwards AFB, California, during tests to improve its radar antennae performance between May 20-28, 2002. During the tests, the suspended helicopter was rotated whilst electronic warfare experts measured a series of antenna patterns. Radar-absorbent materials were also placed on the helicopter to determine the best positions for radar warning receiver antennae. Working with lead contractor ITT Avionics and the US Army's technology applications programme office, the team was to determine whether improvements to the existing placement of RWR antennae on the Chinook was warranted.

The Chinook HC1 can carry 44 fully-equipped troops or a variety of heavy loads, ranging from a five ton truck to a floating bridge. The helicopter has a payload of 21,000lb, a ferry range of 1,000 miles and is capable of 175kt.

Donated to N&S in March 1982, VX580 had one more ‘flight’ in her. With outer wings and engines removed and must of the interior fittings taken out, the Valetta was flown as underslung cargo to Flixton on May 27, 1982, care of 7 Squadron and a Chinook HC.1. Restoration has been continuing ever since.
